They're lucky they pulled this one out. Luck had nothing to do with it, solid defense did. If anything Hawaii was lucky our free throw shooting was down by 26% and that we missed some easy layups. They're a good team but when you get out hustled, out coached and out defended you will almost always lose the game.

Good win for us, while I am not one to complain for free services. I was quite disapointed by the "shuttle" service tonight. I had a group of at least 20 people going to the game tonight with me, we showed up at the union at 6:40(I wanted to go earier but most of the group had to finish off their drinks) and we waited along with maybe 30 other people for the bus to arrive. After 45 mins. of waiting(and sobering up) we got tired of waiting and along with most of the other people there left. I finally made my way down town and caught most of the second half with what was little left of my group. I am glad that we won, but let this be a warning. DO NOT SHOW UP LATER THAN 30 MINS BEFORE A GAME AND EXPECT TO CATCH THE SHUTTLE! yeah i would suggest trying to catch one of the busses once you get inside 6:30, not sure that your gonna get one from the union. if your looking for rides i would suggest that you hit up the busses leaving from Sandberg since there are usually more that leave from there as compared to the union.

Rob Jeter just scored the best home, non-conference win in UWM history. We should see a nice bounce in our RPI.
Bring on the University of Wisconsin - Madison (the other UWM)!
Later, UWMfreak

i have to say that i was quite impressed with this game, granted there were many factors that would have contributed to a loss and it seemed that we were able to overcome them and come out victorious. i know that this can be considered a lame excuse but that officiating was god awful horrible, those ref sucked the high hard one, terrible. And then there was the free-throws, yeah enough said there.
but as has been brought up in another thread our defense was AMAZING. very impressive in that aspect of the game, i thought that it was pretty impressive what every player was able to do against an opponent that was much larger than us.
and one other thing, i personally thought that Tyrone young looked very good on the defensive end of the ball, could have done away with those two shots that he put up but i would say that he redeemed himself just fine with his defense.

Very fortunate to have pulled this one off... free throw shooting as already mentioned was horrid... missed layups and second chance oppurtunities missed could have really hurt us... hawaii had many second chance opps coming down the stretch when their size just took over and they were able to grab offensive rebounds right over us... did anyone notice that there were only 9 fouls i believe in the first half??? this was a big suprise to me seeing as how in the SDSU game there were 9 fouls called within the first 5 minutes... but overall a great nonconference win for the panthers not a very well played game but a great win...

The one thing I was most impressed with was our ability to defend a bigger team so well. They kept them on beyond the 3 point line and were always in their face to deny the 3. I believe we had as many offensive boards as them. With Wisconsin being a big team up front this should have been a nice warm up for that game. They can not miss the lay ups and free throws to Madison. Smith played a very nice game, but I would like to see him be a bit more controled on offense. The shooting will come and most young point guards struggle with their shot early in college. I dont know why they stoped going to Tigert in the second half. It was good for the team I think to win a tough game without Boo and Tucker put up big points will make the team stronger. Ford allowed 6 straight points (dont remember if it was end of 1st or early 2nd half) and let Hawaii right back in the game when it looked like we were going to pull away. Young showed good engery and solid defense I felt, but looks like he is trying to hard to earn minutes on the offensive end. It was a good win, not a pretty one, that will only help this teams confidence over the course of the season.
Also, I was happy with the student turnout. Seems it gets better every game so far. Hope we get a big crowd next Satruday against GB.

Like everyone has already said the defense was fantastic last night. We may have only scored 58 points, but I honestly think that the offense looked as good and if not better than it has all year. Playing against an athletic and long team we had some really good looks and I finally feel RJ is taking the training wheels off the offense. Players seem to be finally comfortable in playing the swing while also finally looking to score in transition. If it wasn't for missed layups, missed tip-ins, an incredibly physical game, and ugly free throw shooting we would have scored 70 points. I give lots of credit to Hawaii and its fans for a good game. Their fans did a very nice job in traveling a long way, and its sad to say, but I thought they did a much better job in making noise than our fans (not in the student section). I have a lot of respect for Hawaii, but I thought #4 (Matt Gipson) showed a complete lack of class. After watching him get in Chris Hill's face after blocking his shot, throw an elbow into Pancratz after committing a foul, and then encouraging the student section to boo him I found myself even happier with this win. Anyways best of luck to Hawaii, they already have a few nice wins under their belt and I hope they go undefeated all the way until the NCAA Tournament. P.S. Does anyone know what the long stop at the start of the game during Boo's free throws was for? Art Vandelay

It was at the request of Jeter/his staff to have the previous play reviewed. The shot clock had run out but counted the hoop. That is why UWM was charged a timeout.
I did not know you could 'challenge' a play. Usually, if a play is reviewable the head ref will call time right after the play to review it. In my years of watching and playing hoops I have never seen anything like that.

Thanks for the clarification. I thought it was definitely a 35 second violation, but when play had continued and Boo had already made his first free throw I didn't think it was possible to go back and review the play. Very strange...

Their fans did a very nice job in traveling a long way, and its sad to say, but I thought they did a much better job in making noise than our fans (not in the student section). My Thoughts form this game are in many ways a direct opposition. This team was not that good. I realize they don't play well on the road but that was a terrible performance. Sensley wasn't a factor at all and I don't think it had a lot to do with our defense. They just didn't look to him til the second half. To me this game showed very little evidence that the players were more comfortable in the Swing. Our good looks and the points we had were the result of an increased tempo. Something that many of us have been calling for all freakin year. We pushed the ball and got points. We played very good perimeter defense. Joah still took dumb shots. AT learned how to make bunnies. Many cuts and picks were made uncrisply and the points we did get in half court sets were the result of drives that aren't the swing as much as they are players taking the game into their own hands. This game served as a case and point on how we will win games aka play good defense, AT/Joah hits bunnies, and run. If we do those three things we can win conference. Has someone said that Massiah looks really good as well? Massiah and Smith have proved their worth very quickly. Anyone notice the middle Student Section chanting "Tyrone Young"? Where did that come from and what did he do to get his own chant? And on the last portion of the quote I cited, I totally agree. The seated fans are the quiet fans and need to stepup if we're gonna rock the Cell. One section will not do.

Fan I saw somethings on offense that were different from what you observed.
1) Misdirection. The Panthers made good use of that not only in positioning the ball but also in their moves to the basket. That was especially true of Tigert who faked in the opposite direction he was going in.
2) Ball movement. The Panthers did a great job of moving the ball around. (okay those bounce passes sometimes left something to be desired) but on the whole those passes did keep Hawaii off balance, opened up the lanes a bunch of times. That's what this offense is designed to do.
3) I didn't think this was increase in tempo. Very few shots were taken with more than 20 seconds left on the shot clock, and most of those that were missed the mark. Those open shots came as a result of working the ball in.
4) Balance - A bunch of guys scored in this game and played well enough so they couldn't be ignored (even Mc Coy). That's also what Jeter says he wants, "guys playing to their strengths." That also kept the Bows guessing, they were looking for Tucker and Davis and they got Tigert, Smith, Massiah, and Mc Coy.
Did UWM execute as well as it should have? Hell no
They missed shots they shouldn't have missed (although Hawaii's height might have had something to do with some of those) But they looked a whole better in that offense than they have been looking and they did that despite playing a much taller defensive minded opponent.
And you're right, Tucker should be thinking long and hard before he tries to bomb away from 3 point land Avery should be taking more time on his shots too. He airballed two easy jumpers when he was wide open. Young made an impressive bucket but he also threw up some bricks.
Still all in all, this was probably the third toughest team on our schedule and we beat them. That should count for something

I believe, Coach Wallace, that Adrian has already graduated. But I understand the sentiment. He is, indeed, the Rainbow Warrior killer.
