That game was UGLY. When guys showed passion in the 2nd half, and we pressed, we took a big lead. Hopefully this is reflective of Jeter's testing of the new system, match-ups, etc. The guys looked lost, especially Tyrone Young. Which I have to mention, I am off the Young bandwagon and officially on the AVERY SHEETS BANDWAGON. If I could sum the night into one photo, it would easily be this image of Lou as Zoro. portrgirl.myphotoalbum.com/view_photo.php?set_albumName=album13&id=100_4072We have a lot to improve in 1 week before Memphis... Our D is tough...but...
I am scared of our bad 3pt shooting.
I am scared of our lack of fast break points.
I am scared of our poor rebounding.
So much needs to be improved...

What? Now you're a Butler fan?!
Obviously you meant Avery Smith. I couldn't agree with you more. I barely noticed him against Parkside but tonight he was terrific. Smart with the ball, knew where he was going, strong, quick hands, willing to attack the basket, defended relentlessly. I know the original plan was to redshirt him, but if I was RJ I would seriously reconsider that.
Unfortunately, I also agree with you about Tyrone Young. Tyrone needs to get with the program. He looked absolutely lost in the ether tonght.
I thought Kevin Massiah played well tonight, too, among the newcomers.
Our guys didn't play with the energy they needed to in the first half, and shot poorly all game. We need to triple up on that energy next week or Memphis will send us home really fast and we won't sniff the rankings again until February. We also need to work the post instead of settling for jump shots.

Some post-game thoughts…
Positives: Defense the guys seem ready to play some tough defense this year (ala Wisconsin). Though there were lapses tonight the team often forced Platteville to use all of the shot clock and to take desperation shots. On inbound passes we can’t let them throw it all the way down court (easy lay-ups piss me off).
Mark Pancratz is playing great off the bench. He seems to be assimilating the offense well, and is doing a great job posting up down low.
Avery Smith this guy is going to be very good. Very quick hands and great instincts with the ball. I came away very impressed.
Negatives: Rebounding out rebounded by 10 against Platteville… not a good thing.
3pt Shooting hopefully just an off night. Had some open looks just couldn’t get them to fall.
Tyrone Young I don’t think he is really comfortable in the offense yet. He seems frustrated and lost out there. His release seems slow and the ball has little rotation. Maybe I’m just used to (spoiled by) Ed McCants out there. I’m going to save judgment on him until he is given time to grow, right now he is pressing. I really want this guy to succeed.

Well we came out with absolutely no fire while Platteville came out with a ton of intensity. After all, this was their biggest game of the season.
I was also very happy with the defense and Avery played his butt off. Awesome to see, Jeter even shook his head and said "I dunno" at the post-game party when asked if he was still going to redshirt him. Bottom line, he completely outclasses Hanson in every way.
Did you guys notice that every time somebody made a mistake they were promptly replaced? Daron Sutton (Brewers- UWM TV announcer) came by us at halftime and made a great point. How do you possibly get into a rhythm when you are substituted so often? That's got to be hard.

Scary quote from the MJS this morning:
"It was Platteville senior against Platteville junior out there." -UWP coach.
Ouch.
Have we gone from being compared to UW to being compared to UWP?

Avery Smith - easily the most effective, most energetic perimeter player on the court last night.
I hope the coaching staff doesn't overreact and pull his shirt this year. Three years starting next year would be sweet.
Ricky and Avery as a backcourt sounds pretty good to me.

How do you possibly get into a rhythm when you are substituted so often? That's got to be hard. Speaking from experience, it is not hard........it is impossible. However, I think that RJ is using the exhibition games as a learning tool/experience. He want to make a point. It is his way or no way. I think that once the guys "get it" a little better, they will be given a little more leash and will eventually not come out immediately after 1 or 2 screw ups. I fully expect his "trigger" to be a bit slower during the regular season.

well, i only caught the second half of the game so that's what i'll base my comments on. i saw a lot of positives and negatives on the floor. the negatives have been thoroughly laid out there. frankly i'm not that worried because we've always rebounded well and defensive lapses were do mostly to a player mistakenly being out of position. missing 3's hurts but everyone was off last night and that won't be the case most nights. we have proven players that have proven they can do these things, just a matter of letting them get into the flow of a game --- and there was ZERO flow last night. my only major concern offensively is who's gonna make up McCant's spot? it's not the sort of position people just pick up the slack for. one of the newcomers needs to step up in a big way and i'd say there's a wealth of talent capable of doing just that. it's gonna take time though. there were a lot of positives to take away from last night. Pancratz is playing not only with passion, which he's always had, but with some new found skill. his shot looks much better. McCoy's also showing some real promise again. we'll need those guys to be x-factor players as the season wears on. I'd agree that Avery Smith looks to be the real deal. that totally caught me by surprise. you have to wonder if he'll still be redshirted when you consider the amount of playing time he saw. you have to be very hopeful about what he's gonna bring. overall it's obvious they're learning a new offensive system and everyone has been getting looks. it's gonna take a little time to make this a fine oiled machine. i'm very curious to see how they perform at Memphis.

Wow, that was pretty brutal last night. I agree with the rest of you that Young looks completely lost. I think it will be fine, he just needs time to pick up the O. I was pleased with McCoy last night, very active around the rim. But rebounding, good lord. To me it looked like our team always wants to leak out for dunks and that usually left one guy on the defensive board. It's hard to admit it, but UWM needs a "knockaround" guy like Wright last year, who on this team is going to do the dirty work?
Amevy Smith did look good last night, but I would still redshirt him this year unless he surpasses Al and plays a decent amount. I would hate to lose a redshirt on a guy playing 5 min. a game.

From what I saw last night, the half court d was tough and intense, unlike some times last season.
Smith looked like a starter to me. Tough, confident and quick. Great on D too.
Looked like they were flat even before the tip. The introductions were without much energy. Not used to seeing that from the Panthers.
Unfortunately, on the down side, the offense was anemic.
There was not enough attacking the rim, too much "Badger Swing", and almost no low post game to speak of.
The press was effective at times, but used far too little for my taste.
Platteville was in total control of the tempo and pace, and we did little to change it.
And I won't even get started on the rebounding. ugh.

My thoughts from last night...
First, if we play like this against Memphis, we will lose by at least 25 points and be thoroughly embarrassed. That being said...
I was very impressed with our half-court defense. Solid in many, many ways. Rebounding left a lot to be desired, but Platteville was consistently forced to the last seconds of the shot clock. Excellent defense, which, early in the season, is always the emphasis.
I honestly think our half-court sets improved offensively. Then again, the most effective lineup had Hill, Smith, Pancratz, Tucker and Tigert - this is not a lineup I think we can win with. Hopefully RJ uses the tape to instruct the other guys how to properly execute this offense.
I think RJ is making a huge mistake playing Smith as much as he is. I'll take that statement back if he doesn't redshirt him. But, if the plan is to redshirt Smith, why are you playing him 10 minutes instead of getting other guys on the court so they can become more acclimated to the offense.
Smith looked great. I also thought that Al Hanson played a solid game.
The new guys...
Kevin Massiah. Looks like he's beginning to understand the offense more. Making better decisions.
Kaylan Anderson. Didn't play enough for me to make much of a comment but did play with aggression.
Tyrone Young. Again, he showed me absolutely nothing. A prior poster thought he was pressing. I disagree. He was lazy and lost - a horrible combination. He needs to EARN the right to be on the court, not think it's given to him. He plays with no heart, no passion. Until he proves me otherwise, I'm thinking this guy might be a bust. He seems to be the second coming of Ricardo Freeman.
Can anyone tell me what Wimmer did to reassume the 12th man designation?

Did you guys notice that every time somebody made a mistake they were promptly replaced? This is a very Bo Ryan thing to do... You mess up, You sit down. You can get an ear full, listen, learn and get your ass in shape during practice next week... or, you can be angry sulk, continue your bad play, and continue to move down the line on the bench.

Interesting thing I have picked up on.
Coach Jeter stated he would press and play the full court in games. I was skeptical of this statement because I did not think it would be a Pearl style hard up press, as well as how much Jeter would run a press on the inbounds.
I noticed, especially last night, that much of the press sets Jeter ran were a one pass and back off press. You take out the PG on the inbound, pressure the 2-4 man who receives the ball, and once it got back to the 1 guard, they relaxed into the half court defense.
So, yes, Jeter, IMO is running a press, but in no way will his press be the same as what he came to love as the Pearl press defense
