My heart is still pounding from excitement!
I posted some of this over on the UIC board so I'll just repeat myself ...
If you would've told me before that McCants would only score 5 points and UWM would win, I would say you are as crazy as UWGB having the best recruiting class in the nation. Hard to admit, but Banks was in his jock all night. Good work from him.
With that being said, we saw the coming out party for Adrian Tigert and Chris Hill tonight. As with what happened with Banks and his 2 points at ISU, when your star player is struggling it is key for someone to step up. Joah Tucker did it against Air Force ... Hill and Tigert did it tonight.
I had a wide-assed grin on my face in the closing minute ... seeing UICStomper and his crew sitting in their seats when UWM had the ball.
Great game all around. Arguably the best mid-major rivalry out there today.
Unfortunately I was unable to attend. How was the atmosphere down there? Hopefully everything remained relatively civil.
I was watching the game on TV. Did it look like Bruce and Jimmy briefly shook hands afterwards? Obviously there will always be a level of distain there between the two, but I think the UIC/UWM rivalry is past the point of just being between the coaches.
These are two quality programs who continue to put on classics everytime they meet.

The Illini fans apparently saw it differently.... mb9.scout.com/fillinoisinsiderfrm1.showMessage?topicID=29703.topic

That's fine. I just don't want to hear the talk of Jimmy being the Saint of Sportsmanship anymore then.

That's fine. I just don't want to hear the talk of Jimmy being the Saint of Sportsmanship anymore then. I honestly think Pearl is instigating. He knows he is not going to get a handshake from Jimmy. Why does he continue to try for it....especially after beating UIC....it's almost like a cheap way to rub it in.....

From the looks of it, Bruce was just doing the normal handshake line with the UIC players and then all of a sudden Jimmy was there.
Honestly, what do you expect him to do?

GREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEAT GAME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The fun bus was a great time. It was nice being the presence of the people on the board.
Even though we only had one full bus of students i would say we rocked that place. the UIC students did not even start their own cheers. It was great to see the all the yellow in our area. You could definetly tell the guys on the court responded to our cheers.
I think we did a good job of getting into some of the UIC players heads. such as "Check his grades" "Whats your major" and "No Means No" and the more lude "Rapist!" cheer.
No body got hurt. Nobody got stabbed. In fact no body did anything to us. So i guess kuddos to both sides on having good sportsman ship.
The actual game had me off my seat. I still feel we need to work harder for our rebounds. At one point i think UIC had 4 offensive boards in one drive. We have to hand it to UIC they held us to 27% behind the arch. But then again this was our first home game. Maybe some jitters we'll have to get out.
As usual Tigert was a pimp. Adding one more double double to his stat book. He even knocked down a 3.
Hill - can we say clutch.
McCants - off night, but i wouldnt trade him for the world.
Tucker - really key, once again gave UWM the spark they needed.
Post Game - I had so much fun waiting for the bus. Cheer for UWM out side the PAV. The best moment our crowd has had this year. Yelling "WHOS HOUSE?"
The zebras - i really felt they had it out for our guys. But even bad refing couldnt stop us.

From Sunday's Chicago Tribune:
Flames doused by UWM Panthers prevail in bone-rattling duel at Pavilion
By Bill Jauss Tribune staff reporter
Adrian Tigert, who muscled home the winning basket in Wisconsin-Milwaukee's 75-67 victory over Illinois-Chicago on Saturday night, personified the kind of game the fierce rivals performed in their Horizon League opener.
It was a bruising, body-banging, no-holds barred physical clash fought out before a crowd of 6,004 at the Pavilion. Tigert, a 6-foot-7-inch, 240-pounder from Oshkosh, caught a pass from Joah Tucker and converted it into the short basket that broke a 65-65 tie with three minutes to play. The Panthers never trailed thereafter.
"A game like this works to my advantage," Tigert said. "I love a physical game like this. I'm not as athletic as a lot of players. I like the contact, so I know where my opponents are."
Tigert led all rebounders with 10. His 15 points were exceeded only by 18 by teammate Chris Hill and 16 by UIC's Cedrick Banks.
"Adrian just battled tonight," Panthers coach Bruce Pearl said. "He's getting better, and he's going to continue to improve."
Officials called 50 fouls in the game, 27 on Milwaukee. UIC played almost 25 minutes with the one-and-one bonus free-throw benefit and almost 17 with the two-shot bonus. UIC made 25 of 35 free throws. UWM made 19 of 24.
UIC senior forward Armond Williams, the team's rebounding leader last year and a member of the preseason all-Horizon League team, made his season debut. He missed the first four games because he was making up academic requirements for eligibility.
Williams had eight rebounds and 12 points in 28 minutes on the floor.
"It felt great to be back out there," Williams said, "but I was a little rusty. I haven't clicked with the younger guys yet."
UWM took a 37-36 halftime lead on a three-point basket by Marshall High School product Boo Davis.
UIC zipped off to a 7-0 lead, but the Panthers tied it 9-9 on a basket by Tigert. The two rivals battled evenly through much of the rest of the first half
UIC, normally a poor foul-shooting team, sank its first eight free throws of the game, four of them by Marcetteaus McGee, to take a 21-15 lead at the 10-minute mark.
Milwaukee fouled early and often, putting the Flames into the bonus one-and-one situation before nine minutes had elapsed and at the two-shot bonus with 7:13 left in the half.
UIC took its second seven-point lead, 26-19, but the Panthers rallied and tied the score four times before Davis' three-point shot earned the visitors their one-point lead at the intermission.
The second half was similar to the first-tough bruising defense.

this game was great. I had such a blast with everybody that went down to the game. the cheers were great, and the seemed to do their job. All the grades stuff for Williams and the McGee stuff was funny as hell too. After watching a bit of the game on tape you can hear our group of students for most of the game, thats great.
I got to say though that the Flames really put on a good game and their are going to be a really tough team down the stretch. I really do have to comend their fans on how they acted and our fans as well. Both teams showed respect that hasn't always been there in the past.
well all that said I'm just glad that i can say that i was there for this game, what a great time we all had. Just made more sweet by the victory.

I had to listen to the radio broadcast over the internet, but it seems to me that James Wright is not getting his due respect - points, rebounds, and steals = great minutes for someone coming off the bench primarily because of Ford's foul situation. Maybe someone who was at the game can tell me how he looked.

Youre right james deserves more props than we give him. Hes a great defensive player, he does grab his fair share of rebounds. However last night he did not look his best. He a made costly and more embarassing mistake last night. After grabing an offensive rebound he took a couple sets to set himself. Then tried dunking, only to get rejected by the rim. Not very smart when all he had to do was take the easy lay up. Plus if youre going to dunk from that close you better be using both hands instead of James using his one hand. Thats all i have to say about dunking. Other wise last night was all about AT, Tucker, and Hill.

our section did such a great job of getting loud. Bruce told us that he and the team could hear us the entire game! that's awesome. my throat is killing me and it feels great!
I have to agree with dunzz saying that wright didn't play his best last night. hopefully he'll be back in full force for tuesday's game. he brings a lot of energy into the ball game and is a great defender.
It was such a sweet sweet victory in UIC!

Great game and so many points I've been dying to post about so bear with me here:
1. The game was neck and neck up until the final 2 min when we pulled away. Exactly as one would expect for the match up.
2. However, I think it shows the real strength of our team that the score remained so close. We were slammed with foul calls and Ed was cold. UIC also had there "secret weapon" Armond Williams. All that should have pushed the score more in UIC's favor.
3. Props to UIC's pregame gathering. A huge bonfire burning in the middle of the parking lot with smores, etc. Lots of strings must've been pulled to get that through.
4. Speaking of parking lots, I counted 25+ school busses there on my way out. Certainly shows where the crowd comes from. It's also decieving with the area only 2/3 used.
5. Post game local news coverage down here in Chicago was also humorous. You'd think it was Milwaukee local coverage. First off all they say about UIC is that they lost and that "Aaron" Williams was eligible to play. Yes that's right, Aaron, they can't even get the name of their town player correct. Second topic was about Chris Hill's performance, and lastly they should the UWM student section having a blast in the stands and completely neglected showing anything UIC.
6. Props to Chris Hill's performance. He also seems to emerge with a quiet rebound among guys twice his size.
7. I'm sure I'll think of more, but as has been said earlier, both groups fans stayed in good control and manners (still have to work on the F' bombs, especially around adult alumni) and the chears were creative.

nice find on the article Kingsbury.
it's pretty sad that the article which looks like it is supposed to be semi-professional couldn't really get any key information correct
