Should be another Blow Out. My line - UWM 99, Parkside 60. Just to be fair.
Parkside Roster
If you have to, skip out on Parkside and make a greater effort to make Air Force. November 28th...we need a big crowd!

1,000 students and 4,500 in attendance should be the goal tonight. The prolific scoring against Prairie View should stir some interest and we're the only game in town.

i hope your right about the crowd. i'm not certain whether the D2 opponent will keep people away, or the fact that they're a state team may attract some more fans? we'll see. either way i hope to see a nice student turnout. get out the word if you can!

I hope I'm wrong, but I think 4,000 might be what we'll see tonight. Did anyone else see the great writeup/preview of the Panther v. Parkside game the J/S ran today? Neither did I.... If you ask me, that becomes the first focus of alumni efforts to affect change in attendance, support and coverage. More on those thoughts tomorrow night...

Agreed, uwmfan. This is precisely what I've expressed to Freak. That coverage rivals what we got as a 3-24 team back in the day. Sorry I'll miss tomorrow's meeting.

The upsetting thing about the js is that we arent going to get any major coverage unless we beat a high team (ie Kansas, Purdue, Wisconsin) I don't see a victory over Air force or even Saint Louis making page 2. Something needs to change in the coverage.

well, being the only game in town this sunday, i think a win over air force will get some deserved attention. i just hope people get out to show their support for that one. they're gonna need a pumped up crowd.

As much as I hate to say it i don't think that the JS cares about as much as that other school in town that I can never remember the name of? ? agreed that we get no respect until we beat a good team or get a shot at that other team, which we have all had that debate once or twice on this board before. I don't see a big crowd showing for this one just for the fact that it is a D2 team and thanksgiving break may have driven some people home already. See you all at the game!

If we think that 4,000 is a "big crowd," then we think less of our program than we should. Simply put, 4,000 is a smaller-than-average crowd in Division 1 basketball.

i don't think anyone insinuated that 4,000 is a big crowd... simply a realisitic estimate for tonight. frankly i'll be surprised if we get a larger showing than the home opener. i hope i'm wrong... and i look forward to the day we ask why only 4,000 showed up last night?! it'll happen, it's just going to take some time.

The upsetting thing about the js is that we arent going to get any major coverage unless we beat a high team (ie Kansas, Purdue, Wisconsin) I don't see a victory over Air force or even Saint Louis making page 2. Something needs to change in the coverage. Yes, the Milwaukee Yournal is a crappy news paper and even though its crappy, we still do not get any coverage from it. How about this. were all very smart intelligent people, who day in and day out write about sports with each other. I suggest that we collectivly make a sports magazine dedicated to UWM sports. Mainly focusing on mens basketball bc it rocks so hard. We can distribute them at the dorms. The dorms are our largest target auidience anways. So that would be a good place to start. We got to be able to get some money from the black and gold organization or we can start our own one. Think about it. We could promote UWM sports in the best possible manner. Nobody in milwaukee knows about basketbal more than us. For once we can give real analysis, rather than the crap we see in the JS. All of you are well articulated people, I expect all of you to give this major consideration. NOW to talk about Parkside....... I am excited to see Tyrone Deacon play. A Michigan State Transfere has had to some good practice time might prove to be a good challenege for our boys on the floor. Im not sure about the history of these two rivals, but its crazey to believe that UWM has lost more games to Parkside than it has won. Recently Bruce have beaten Parkside twice, so i guess we wll just throw out those others games bc UWM Panthers used to blow. that was BP. This DP. BP = before pearl, DP = Durring pearl. I do not know anything else beyond their game notes off the panther web site, but i believe we will trample this team too. At least its a short drive home for them. For those of you going to game. Sport your Bruce Is my Homeboy tee!

Couple of things here...
Keep in mind that an "average" attendance among ALL DI programs is close to 5-6,000. I think it will take many winning seasons to convert our current numbers to the 10,000 many here want to see on a regular basis. It's just not likely to happen (of course if it does, by that time I think folks will stop using the term "mid" with UWM...)
Second, the coverage we've received I have a hunch is tied to the same things you see in the Cell; too many fans come to expect "others" will lead the cheers as well as the campaign to get the media involved.
The media will respond to a few things; if we fill the place up night after night we'll get *some* love. But the J/S will respond moreso to consistent feedback from its readership and advertisers. We need a two-pronged approach in getting both the editors and sponsors realizing that we demand better coverage; if we don't get it they will loser readership, thus lose eyes seeing ads placed.
We need to sell those same editors that they have something to gain by better coverage; that over 125,000 alum, most of whom still live in SE Wisconsin, will open their eyes to what they publish and/or have to sell.
So while the things posted on this site are great, how many of you are writing Garry Howard at the J/S? How often? Right now too many of us are preaching to the choir.
This leads me to other thoughts/questions for you all; outside of this board and at games, what things are each of you doing to promote UWM (basketball and otherwise) in a positive way? How often are you wearing some other school's merchandise? Why? Folks who know me know my car because of it's UWM messages; same thing with the clothing I wear both at work and otherwise. People know of my passion for UWM/Athletics and year by year they have learned the great things I've been preaching. Not saying we should all only own UWM apparel, but each time you're wearing something UWM it sends a message everywhere you go.
People ask me why I never wear Badger stuff. I ask why I should. They reply because, "...they're WI's team!" I never went to school there, could care less if they have the only DI football program and have no other reason to "cheer" for Bucky. In my view, every time one chooses to wear someone elses school stuff, we're missing the opportunity to market our own.
Anyway, back to the point. Fan 22, I have one different thought from what you stated ("...the js is that we arent going to get any major coverage unless we beat a high team (ie Kansas, Purdue, Wisconsin...")
Beating a high major will get you coverage for one game; however to get a sustainable presence in the media it will come from supporters calling, writing, etc. the staff at the J/S more than they get from MU and/or Badger fans. Sure they'll spike a bit of coverage for those "special" games, but they won't give us the consistency we want until we are consistently on their backs.
Winning has certainly brought so much to UWM in recent years. But we have a responsibility to take it a step further if we really are commited to furthering UWM athletics and as an institution.
Ok....climbing down from the soapbox. The podium is free for shelling me with rebuttals!!!

Nice post! ;D I agree with you whole heartedly uwmfan! The "choir" needs to step outside the box, stop practicing in private, and go and sing to anyone that will listen!
