"Let's start with image. First thing, drop the hyphen that relegates UWM to the children's table.
A 30,000-enrollment school must be called the University of Milwaukee for proper athletic branding. It certainly doesn't hurt in places such as Memphis, Cincinnati, Louisville, Houston and Pittsburgh.
The UW System Board of Regents won't like it, but so what? Declare your symbolic independence and create a distinct brand from the mother ship in Madison."- I couldn't agree more. Image matters. Branding matters.

From a fan’s perspective what has been very frustrating is that the majority of these problems relating to branding and the athletic department is in the control of the university. The university controls branding, the university controls imaging, the university controls hiring coaches, the university controls hiring athletic directors and so forth...
Question:
What steps would the university have to take in order to officially change its name to the University of Milwaukee? Would the university need approval from the UW System Board of Regents or any other entities?

My guess is that it would grudgingly give the go-ahead, but that it could compromise funding.

In the last three months, we've lost our women's soccer coach, our men's soccer coach, our athletics director, three men's basketball players and spent $15,000 on an arena that may never be built.

Some people (including myself) have suggested keeping the school's official legal name as is, but branding itself publicly as the University of Milwaukee for athletics AND academics similar to how Virginia Polytechnic Institute & State University is almost exclusively known as Virginia Tech (and yes, that is VT's legal name). I've never really been a fan of Michael Hunt, but it's SO refreshing to have someone in the mainstream media not only talking about our branding issues, but supporting the necessary changes.

Loved the article, but a question persists: who's going to pay for it?

Agreed, but not quite as refreshing as the first time I heard it in print, from Jimmy Lemke.

My point is that it's finally not only Jimmy Lemke and other people from the black & gold bloodstream who are advocating for Milwaukee athletics and the university itself.
From the article:
And the committee shouldn't be so egg-headed as to require candidates to have at least a master's in sports administration because the Panthers might miss out on some freethinking people who know how to see through UWM-type problems and create the right marketing niche for UWM sports in this city.
I believe that niche is the idea of the Panthers as the east side's team. The east side (and I'm including places like Riverwest, Third Ward and Bay View in this as well) tends to view itself as a "city within a city" that's culturally different from the rest of Milwaukee. Why not give them their own team(s) to rally around?

Considering that Mike Hunt only writes about the Panthers when he's in a mood to bash something (except when Jimmy is ghost-writing his columns ), what do folks think Hunt would actually consider to be the "right marketing niche for UWM sports?"
i'm guessing somewhere below the "other NBA" team, or at least below girls prep sports.
