A dream..... *The UWM sleeping giant truly wakes up, realizes its potential and makes a visionary and long term commitment to athletics. *What could this look like? <A clear stated vision right from the top with timeframes, accountabilities and fund-raising objectives and implementation plans. <We have had so many master plans it makes one's head spin. Hard to hire an AD and expect him or her to lead a department when the vision is murky and budgets limited. <Under the heading of would't it be nice?? *UWM joins the MAC - we add football and once and for all have something to be proud of and fits the stature of our footprint. If Northern Illinois in De Kalb can do this why not us? <We take over the Wisconsin paperboard property and have an athletic village consisting of baseball, track and field, tennis and a new basketball arena. Keep soccer at Engelmann.. football stadium of modest size built in Park East corridor..believe if we were part of the MAC if we build it they will come...this is not slouch D - ! football <Baseball - know it is cold weather and not a great income generator but we are the ONLY Division 1 baseball team in the state. Would be a shame...one thought is go to Bud Selig and maybe he could donate a million or two of the $20 million he is paid every year . Yes, he has done a lot for the community but come on...do it and we will name it Bud Selig Field for gosh sakes. Community and baseball has made him rich and would be a great legacy. If the Bradleys could donate $70 mil he could cough up some to put his name on it. Second optin would be to re-visit the Major League baseball iniitative and make it a baseball complex for inner city youth that UWM could also utilize. Put just that in Lincoln Park if need be and just do it... OK,, I just woke up... but could any or all of this be really that unrealstic for a university our size? ?? Still believe it would lifet all boats and generate more endowments and support for the university long term. Sure, theoretically should athletics be that big of a deal in the reputation of a university? No... but it is...Donna Shalala and others learned that at "U W - Madison"... Steve King

Good luck convincing what few donors we have to pony up for a $100 million facility when Costello couldn't even get the funds together for a $40-60 million facility.

"Let's just do it. Tell them you want me as AD. I won't wait." Joke, right? I think it speaks to how much I joke around that you'd think I was serious. Maybe I need to be more serious. I was, actually, thinking about coming up with a "campaign" for me to be the new AD where I point out the kind of person they need to recruit. Of course, I WAS part of the Koonce S&SC, so I should be run out of town That's it. Done joking.

This is exactly what an athletics director -- a good one -- is supposed to do. Reach out to the donors so he can reach inside their wallets.

The whole athletics department is in complete shambles.... They need to start over from sqaure one and rebuild it. And if they want donors they need to show that they have their house in order. That is not the case right now at all. Pretty sad for an urban college the size it is. Very frustrating as a fan of UWM. I am at a loss as to what is going on..

Precisely,
The key is having a solid consistent well thought out model and follow it with specifics, timelines and accountabilities. While I would love us to say join the MAC, have a real solid D 1 football program, upgrade baseball, build a new arena of our own I frankly would also be satisfied with a much more modest scenario where mens basketball continues as flagship, even without our own arena and we continue at the Cell (not the worst thing, attendance and environment improving), no athletic village but some sort of baseball upgrade, no football, etc... JUST ONCE AND FOR ALL DECIDE, AND STICK TO IT. Certainly has to be D 1 but whatever the scope define it, and do it well and consistently, Sick of al the master plans and mission statements. How is a donor to get excited if UWM keeps changing its mind and vacillating. Decide on the model, stick to it , organize it, follow through and promote the heck out of whatever is decided but get going!!! Then stick to it and have well defined objectives, action plans and timelines. Not to mention accountabilitie.

also whatever is decided make people accountable, no long term contracts out of fear but pay for performance, limited patience and accountability. Expect success and do not settle for mediocrity. Hire the right people and after a long enough period of medicority make the change...unless stupid long term contracts were given out and we are stuck...that is the case now and should not be repeatedi

Being an AD is about relationships. The relationships you create with your staff, with the donors, with the student athletes, and with the fans.
Once you develop the personal relationships and have a plan of attack formulated. You can approach people for money. The way our donor base is with select donors capable of significant gifts, it's imperative to develop partnerships with outside organizations.
The last I remember the Milwaukee County parks system had more land than they could afford. There are professional sports organizations that have community charities. When it comes down to it, you have to leverage as many partnerships as possible to meet the needs of the department and the university.
