A new idea that came up was to actually pick a centralized location to catch the online games. I thought it'd be cool if we could put it up on a screen and get the fans together. The idea is to build fanatics... not just casual fans. It'll be interesting to see how it works. they should put it on the movie screen in the dorms, that'd be tight!

So I was doing some thinking this weekend. I was at the Badger hockey game on Saturday night and we lack a key component to the basketball games.... a "cheer leading" band. We have nothing for the students to do as a reaction to certain things happening. The Badger band, which I do understand is held in high regards around the country, leads the student section, even with little drum patterns, or other chants/dances. We need to not hear the same 5 songs all game long, but rather let the band help in student section development.
Now no one get the wrong impression here, I'm not taking shots at our band, rather suggesting they be EXTREMELY involved in the whole student interest program. Whoever is serious about taking the student section to a new level, I suggest talking to the band director. Just a few thoughts, feel free to elaborate.

That's awesome. People should get in contact with Mike Kennedy, Jimmy Lemke, Tom Willems, and the rest of the SBGC and get the ball rolling.

some of us try to start cheers but we always seem to get cut off by whatever crap the cheerleaders come up with. i think there are two things that hurts us from being more involved with the students: all the damn commercials that are played through out the game, and our location. cant do anything about the commercials unfortunetly, they'll probably always be there, with out constant sellouts (see madison) we need the revenue. on to location the thing that could be changed. i hate being in that hole on the side, we seem disconnected from the rest of the students. best thing i think is too voice concerns to the athletic dept. they give us the area to play. however i seem to recall the horizon league rule forcing us to play where we are. if anything put us on risers. if you have song (or anything you think we could help with) suggestions you can email our director (scott corely)/ or the sudent conductors (ben henninger, scott jones). we do have some new stuff in the works as i alluded to in an earlier post. other wise you can pm or email me any concerns you have and i can forward them along.

Is it possible the band could lead the way in starting some type of ritual hand motions, or certain things that come to be by watching the band? Also, how many members is the band going to have playing games this year?

we're going to continue to have a 30 piece band at games (thats the offical size a band can be for horizon and ncaa tournament games). plus in that small area even ten more people would get awfully cramped. if anyone at midnight madness wondered why the tubas werent in the hole with the rest of us, we had close to 45 kids there and that bumped them up to the seats behind us.
hand motions: we give some cues during the fight song in the middle ofthe song theres a small fanfare (its short listen to the song off the schools website if you dont know what i mean) were we all raise our bells you guys could yell or shove fists in the air. same could be done for the end of the song....fight fight for uwm, a fist pump on each word could be cool when in unison. we do have alot of horn movements to many songs but they can get lost due to being at a lower elevation than the rest of the students. i hope that's what you were asking for as far as this is concerned.

Yea, I'm just trying to throw some ideas out there to get this thing rolling. Being in the band, do you have anyway/access to getting the lyrics to the school song out on campus or any sort of thing like that? I would imagine that would also be a nice first step to take

cool, bball themore people to get involved the better the section will become. the lyrics are posted on the same page as the fight song download. www.uwm.edu/Dept/Chancellor/SoundsofUWM.htmi know other posters have said this before too but, having freshman orientation at the cell with sheets including the school song and cheers would be awesome in getting folks to know the words. other than that i think the individual has more impact on others getting their friends to know the songs etc. as opposed to someone shoving a paper in their hands in the union.
