What really bothers me is that not all marquette fans are like that--in fact, most of them are not like that. And yet crap like this makes it virtually impossible for discussion about marquette and uwm to occur without arguments following. As someone who follows marquette, uwm, and uw basketball, I think it's pathetic to read all the trash-talking that goes on.
That said, time to get rowdy for the game tonight.

The students were awesome last night. Didn't like the F*** you Butler chant but they were loud and that set the pace for the rest of us.

The students were awesome last night. Didn't like the F*** you Butler chant but they were loud and that set the pace for the rest of us. Chants that distasteful will not continue next year. I ran into Haidet in the union a few minutes ago and talked to him about the possibility of making flyers that perhaps gave our "newer" fans some insight of how we want to do things in the section. Our fans have class... our bandwagon fans don't. I'm sure we can figure out a way to put everybody on the same page... and keep it indimidating, yet clean(er), I was tempted to just chant, "Grow up freshman" back at the chanters yesterday but I figured I was outnumbered.

From being down in the student section it was hardly just the freshman. There were a lot of idiots all around that place

Those types of chants won't stop until more students start to regularly attend games. Over the season I think we did a decent job of breaking in underclassmen, and newcomers on how to behave during the game. The problem comes when the "ESPN crowd' shows up and feeds off each others idiocy (usually alcohol induced). Flyers and also a presentation during the STAR program for incoming freshman could do a lot to help. I actually enjoyed the zero tolerance policy towards swearing that was employed during the Loyola game. If security and the police let the students know what is expected of them then behavior improves drastically. I don't want to take away the fun of going to games or make it seem like some Nazi regime, but I also don't want to worry about some people embarrassing me and the school I love on national TV.

It was more than just freshman. From my seat I could see that way more than 1/2 of the standing students were joining in that chant. For many it may have been their first game or something and they just didn't know any better.

I agree, it was really more then just the freshman. I want to give props to the Panther Band and Cheerleaders for last night. Every time any chants with an F bomb and even the BS chant started, they would start up another cheer and kill the bad one, BIG props on that!
Also, and maybe I am just nit picking a bit, I think it is bad enough that we turn around during the other teams cheer routines etc, but can we at least refrain from the middle finger? Those were cool back in 8th grade.
Otherwise, awesome showing last night! I am very proud to have been a part of it all year after year!

yeah i had one guy by me who was telling his buddies "yeah we gotta get into these guys' heads early. HEY POLK, F*** YOU YOU F***IN b****!" i told the guy if he keeps droppin' F bombs there's a good chance he'll get kicked out but this is apparently his schtick for the one game a year he attends and nothing happends. needless to say that type of language did absolutely nothing to break these guys.

Well as this goes, more than once I had to trun around and yell shut up...
I think that the senior memeber of this board...who ever it will be. Come together before the season and work with the cheerleaders or AD's Office to come up with the rules of the section.
Not only do this but, since we are the "leaders" we get our rightful place upfront. Like at Duke. 10-15 People ruling the masses.
I think to be a good section we need to be organized, and work with all parties. AD, Cheerleading, The Cell (ie Signs and Megaphones)
Anyone Down With This Idea?

I'm with you Dunne. I'll happily meet with Bud about these issues. Like I said, I basically already have. Anyone else want to join? It doesn't have to be immediatly... but we certainly need to do something.
The "ESPN" crowd is an embarrassment... we definetely need to find a way to make core fans. That way they'll actually care how they make our school look. Problem with the "one-and-dunners" is that they don't ever feel the repercussions of yelling "F^ck this or F^ck that" Want to know what kind of fan someone is? Ask them if they've ever heard of this board.

I would hardly say that the section was an embarassment last night. Some aspects were bad, but overall, the noise level and the effect was great. I like the idea of generals but I'm not sure they would be listened too.
There also needs to be mechanism for deciding who they will be. How is it done at other schools? Is it a booster club that decides?

Well this is my thing.
Like at bigger schools, you get the core guys to buy into the "Generals", they then yell and get on those guys from not listening to them.
Also, if people see where the Generals get to be during the games. They will straighten up, cause maybe they would want to be there.
If you really want to be stubborn, remind them that these games are free for a reason. That this privillage can be taken away for a WHOLE season if we deem it so.
On another note: Let me know, Im ready to meet, anytime to work somethings out.!
