Wow:
Simonton, a 6'11", 220-pound post, is a long and athletic frontcourt star who not only is highly mobile, but also has the ability to drop shots from the perimeter.
6'11" and 220 pounds? How much time will he have to put in in the weight room to survive D1 basketball? Less than Alec Brown at GB, who is two inches taller and five pounds lighter. Edit: And let's not forget that Jason McCoy was 6'9'' and 195

Did Jon Leuer, who stands 6-10, weigh any more than 220 when he enrolled at UW-Madison?

Flames look to reverse fortunes midstatehoops.com/v5/?p=5484"They should be in the top half of the Horizon League this coming season." There, they will join Butler, Detroit, Cleveland State, Valparaiso, Milwaukee, Wright State and Green Bay.

With the new faces and attitudes I think we can finish a lot higher than expected this year but who's doing the math?? If we join Butler, Detroit, CSU, VU, Milwaukee, WSU and GB in the top half how many teams do we have? That's eight teams in the top half of a ten team league? What have I missed in the off season???

I like Howard and hope he does well, but if I were a UIC fan I'd go into this season just hoping that the attitude has changed -- I wouldn't be putting money down on a top half finish. But I never fault a fanbase for being excited when there's a new coach.
This league will be really tough this year. When I see predictions of Detroit finishing second, and virtually no mention of teams like Milwaukee, CSU, Valpo, GB and Wright all I can do is shake my head. This is going to be an exciting year.

BBFan, you are right. I think this year's going to be a good one in the Horizon League. Predicting Detroit 2nd right now shows that the person has absolutely no knowledge about the entire league or any teams. The prediction is based on an incoming class and most probably one player without regard for the rest of the league's changes as well. I really can't say where I think we might finish but we will be better than originally thought, which doesn't necessarily translate into wins, but one can hope. I do feel bad that the league's teams as a whole don't draw better than they do, especially with having some of the largest cities in the midwest in the league. Chicago, Milwaukee, Detroit, Indy, Cleveland......... The basketball world in those areas are missing out on some great stuff... Anyway, can't wait for yip off and some great games. Good luck to you guys and let's play!!!!!

axaguy, the Big Ten casts a wide shadow in this part of the country. It's a tough sell unless the opponent is Ohio State, Indiana, Wisconsin, Michigan State or Purdue.
My concern about Detroit centers on the loss of Xavier Keeling, who was the undeniable "X" factor in the Titans' season sweep of Cleveland State with 24 and 21 points, respectively.
Junior had better be at least second-team-all-conference good to replace The X Man, who was an absolute load when he was motivated to excel.

ghostofdylan, I think our league's inability to draw more is not a factor of any Big Ten shadow. It's a matter of our own schools not properly marketing/promoting/advertising/encouraging students, alumni and basketball interested fans to come out to see us. This a topic for another thread and has been at the UIC site before. We all suck at promoting our own product/schools. Why can Marquette, a school of about 8,000, pull in 15-18,000 per game right ACCROSS THE STREET from your home with your large student/alumni base right there, and you draw 3,000, if that, per night?? Same goes for UIC in Chicago. We have an enrollment of about 25,000 and 10% of the college grads in the area are UIC alums. They are not going to Champaign, they just are not coming to see us..... WE both have huge bases to exploit and market to and aren't doing it successfully. It's not the Big Ten, it's us!!! Just my thoughts..........

Very simple answers... Money History/Tradition Big Conference Money Money It's really that simple. Not saying we can't improve by any means, but those are the reasons why...

Most college team don't draw to well in urban cites.

axaguy, I agree with the each school's -- and the league's -- failure to aggressively market itself.
Still, you cannot deny the fact that schools such as Michigan, Illinois, Indiana, Marquette and Wisconsin cast a very large and long shadow over programs such as ours.
Why do we draw 5,000 for the Butler game when the Bulldogs are ranked No. 8? Because the the Badgers are on TV at the same time ... or the Golden Eagles are playing across the street.
