The discussion:
Do we recommend to the university a salary level/structure for the next job?
Further: if we do recommend a certain level of pay, are we looking to define a specific dollar level? Or are we looking to define the salary against the salaries of Horizon League competitors?
Further: if we are recommending a specific number, are we recommending a number for the pool of the entire coaching staff? Or are we simply suggesting a number for the head coach?

Budgeting for a new head coach and his staff is a very sensitive issue. Whoever is responsible for such decisions cannot look at the issue in a vacuum. It has to be considered in relation to everything else that makes up the budget. I do not think we are in position to suggest anything specific.
Any group recommendation could include an assumption that compensation would be in line with what predecessors have received and HL peers are receiving. I would leave it at that.

I have been compiling the contracts for the head coaches in the conference. Scott Nagy is still making $500,000 per year. If we're expecting the next coach to make our program the best in the Horizon League, it may require we be willing to pay higher than $500k for their salary.

Pay what is reasonable for a mid major conference. I think length of contract is what has got us into trouble. The market dictates how much but not how long.

Coffman is 175K Kampe is a bit over 300K Horn is 400K Calhoun is 200K Toole is a bit under 500 before incentives
At one point I'm pretty sure I read Yaklich was 500k. I've been told Davis is about 450 but haven't jumped through the hoops to verify that.
Don't recall ever finding anything for Crenshaw. I'd guess under 200K.

It might behoove us to look at the pay for coaches in the Atlantic 10. I think a clear recommendation to the university that we should see the Atlantic 10 as the conference we aspire to be members of would require us to also be able to let them know what the compensation level of men's basketball coaching staffs are in that conference. Maybe I'm putting the cart before the horse and we should have a thread about whether or not to be clear about the level of success (and conference) we hope the new coach will attain.

MVC makes a lot more sense as a target, especially right now, and it doesn't look like we're a candidate (even though I'd argue we're a better option than everyone they're talking to except UIC). I'd like to see them just focus on getting their sh&t together

Maybe I'm putting the cart before the horse and we should have a thread about whether or not to be clear about the level of success (and conference) we hope the new coach will attain. You are putting the cart before the horse regarding potential conference movement. Stay focused on the main objective - selection criteria for the next head coach. Don't complicate this. Stay direct and on point. The coach does not play a very significant role regarding conference affiliation changes.
