By the way, I got ten bucks says that if Shaka's coming to Milwaukee, he'll pitch PBS to be his lead assistant. If Pat Baldwin Sr. is hunting for a new job, it's far more likely a head coaching job that would come with a head coaching buyout clause and a multi-year deal. I think DePaul is dumb enough to take a flyer on him for what they could see as "guaranteed" tournament appearance and possibly better with PB Junior in a package deal. Assistant coaches with multi-year contracts are almost unheard of, unless they're the heir apparent to a long-time head coach. I think Pat Baldwin would look at it as a guaranteed job at a similar salary, but he'd be leaving himself wide open the moment Pat Junior declares for the draft. If Pat Baldwin Sr. leaves, I think it's to somewhere that will make a multi-year commitment to him.

Chris Collins is probably the only HC who could offer him a multi-year deal as an assistant. Junior probably doesn't even have to be included considering NU has been that abysmal since PBS' departure.

Jimmy, a guy with a 47-70 record and no winning seasons in 4 years in a bad league has no marketability as a head coach anywhere else. PBS either rights the ship here (and not for one anomalous season with the kind of spectacular recruit that he will never have the opportunity to get close to again, but over multiple championship or tournament seasons), or he uses the escape hatch of going to a high major as a lead assistant or associate head coach where he can sort of rinse off the stink of his tenure here and hopefully re-emerge as a HC candidate down the line. He will never have as good a chance to do the latter as right now. His chances of doing the former are — based on all the evidence so far — really bad.
And btw, putting aside the multi-year contract question, he could probably get an assistant’s job at the right P5 school without much if any of a cut in pay right now.

With all your experience as a college basketball fan, I think you're underestimating just how stupid a university administrator could be. Your argument is rational. A lot of people who hire head coaches for college basketball are not rational.

Indiana is f***ing delusional if they thought they were going to get Chris Holtmann to leave Columbus. I said this when they were talking about Brad Stevens to IU: this is like when the NBC brass were having second thoughts about Jay Leno after he wasn't doing too well at the beginning as host of the Tonight Show. They considered doing what they should have done in the first place and hiring David Letterman to host the Tonight Show. It's something Letterman had always wanted and many thought deserved after spending so long following Johnny Carson. In the end, Letterman went to CBS. Sure, it was the Tonight Show, but it wasn't Johnny Carson's Tonight Show. It was tainted goods. Sure..."It's Indiana..." but it's not Bobby Knight's Indiana.

I still think in the end IU will back up the Brinks truck for Moser.

I still think in the end IU will back up the Brinks truck for Moser. Loyola has their own Brinks truck. Don't forget they've got that group of old fogies, each worth tens or even hundreds of millions, who put up the $100 million to build the facilities and then paid up to keep Porter Moser after the Final Four. They're desperate to win another national title. Indiana might be willing to back up the Brinks truck, but Loyola's in a really interesting spot. They might let Moser go, but they'll have someone they know will take the job ready to go.

Sounds like Chris Beard has the inside track on the Texas job.

I'm skeptical. I can't imagine a guy who's spent about a third of his life at TTU would give another school (even his alma mater) the "hometown discount".
I think UT's gonna need to outbid TTU. While that's obviously doable, it ends with them paying him Coach K money...if they're willing to do that, they should've thrown it at Bill Self 6 years ago.
