The early games today in HL Women's Basketball were entertaining to watch. Green Bay traveled to Cleveland to play the Vikings and couldn't really get rolling until late in the third quarter. The surge continued in the fourth quarter, and the Phoenix pushed the lead to double digits. Cleveland State battled back but couldn't close the gap. The final score was 71-62, Green Bay.
The disruptions caused by COVID and Detroit's cancelling the rest of the season meant that Robert Morris played Wright State on consecutive weekends; this weekend RMU is the home team. The Colonials played great defense and hit some timely shots. They led the entire game. Their lead got to double digits several times, and the Raiders weren't able to get closer than two points in the fourth quarter, and RMU held on to win 50-43. It is their first win of the season, and in league play.
Purdue Fort Wayne played Oakland tough before fading at the end of the game, losing 58-49. It was, for the Mastadons, their first loss this season by less than 10 points.

I wasn't sure what to expect from tonight's game between IUPUI and Milwaukee. The Panthers have been on a roll, and the Jaguars hadn't played in three weeks. Going into the game, IUPUI was ranked sixth in the mid-majors poll with the Panthers right behind at seventh.
It wasn't a fast start for the Panthers, and against a high-scoring team like the Jaguars a slow start could have been catastrophic. After a 2-all tie early, IUPUI went on a nine-point run. The Panthers then scored eight consecutive points, to reduce the lead to 11-10, but the Jaguars finished out the quarter outscoring the Panthers 7-2 to finish up the first quarter up 18-12. The teams each scored 16 points in the second quarter, so the Jaguars' half-time lead stayed at six points, 34-28.
As they have done all season, the Panthers caught fire in the third quarter. The Panthers surged ahead in the quarter, finishing up 57-54. Brandi Bisping, who had a slow first half, scored nine of the Panthers' 29 points in the quarter, and McKaela Schmelzer had eight points in the quarter. The Panthers shot 75% in the quarter.
IUPUI started the fourth quarter with a 6-2 run over the first 2:25 of the fourth quarter, taking a 60-59 lead. The teams traded baskets and the lead for the next three minutes or so, and then the Panthers scored the next nine points to take extend a 63-62 lead to 72-62 with 1:25 remaining. At thet point the Jaguars were reduced to fouling the Panthers to try to stop them. The Panthers finished the game up 74-66.
The Panthers benefitted from the oficiating. Macee Williams got two early fouls in the game, and struggled to stay on the floor the rest of the way. She shot poorly, finishing with six points and four fouls. Overall, 21 fouls were called on the Jaguars compared to 18 for Milwaukee. The Panthers turned that into a 23-17 edge in free throw attempts, and a 22-11 advantage in free throws made.
The Panthers had their usual balance in scoring: Bisping (17 pts) led the way, with Megan Walstad (16), Sydney Staver (13), Schmelzer (10), and Emma Wittmershaus (9) making valuable concentrations to the win.
This was a big win with respect to the league standings. Milwaukee and Northern Kentucky are the only undefeated teams in league play, and the Norse haven't played the last three weeks. According to the schedule, NKU is due to visit Milwaukee next weekend. Even if the Jaguars win tomorrow to split the series, the Panthers have played and won four more league games, and IUPUI has Green Bay up next on the schedule, in Green Bay. Wright State already has two losses in league play, thanks to being upset by Robert Morris today.

Tbh, now that that’s on the table PFW should probably join them. Matt Menzel mentioned the situation in Fort Wayne in passing during the broadcast. The Purdue Fort Wayne coach has a horrendous losing percentage, and she's been there awhile; i am a little surprised they've stuck with her so long. So if there are NCAA regulations violations, shouldn't that be the last straw?

In the meantime, for the sake of the players and support staff they should probably opt out

The early games today included two upsets. Robert Morris University beat Wright State to sweep their series, this time by a score of 68-65. The Raiders are now 9-3 in league play. In Cleveland, the Vikings turned the tables on Green Bay, earning a series split by winning 60-48. This game was the exact opposite of yesterday's game in that it was Cleveland State that went on a late third quarter run to take control of the game, as the Phoenix did on Friday. Green Bay is now 7-3 in league play. These results take a little bit of pressure off Milwaukee to sweep IUPUI. The Panthers are, I am sure, motivated to win nonetheless.
In the next two games this afternoon, the home teams completed sweeps. Oakland defeated Purdue Fort Wayne, and Youngstown State defeated UIC.

All I can say is "Great Googily Moogily."
It took two overtimes to do it, but Milwaukee emerged with an 85-83 win for a series sweep over IUPUI.
The Jaguars went to the free throw line 38 times, but made only 26, so the game was lost at the free throw line. The Panthers fared better at the line, but shot an uncharacteristic 72.7%. It was still enough to eke out a win. Another key stat was turnovers: the Panthers had only twelve turnovers in 50 minutes.
The Panthers were led by Megan Walstad with 23 points and 11 rebounds, her seventh double-double of the season. Emma Wittmershaus was next with a new career high of 16 points, including shooting 3-5 from distance; she also contributed an assist and a block before fouling out in the second overtime period. Bre Cera had a career-high tying 13 points, with five rebounds and four assists. McKayla Schmelzer had 10 points, five assists, one steal, and one block.
Milwaukee is now 12-0 in league play, and are scheduled to play Northern Kentucky at home next weekend.

The Panthers were led by Megan Walstad with 23 points and 11 rebounds, her seventh double-double of the season. POTW. I haven't even looked at what other players did and I didn't have her in first *among Milwaukee players* heading into the night, but POTW.

I haven't even looked at what other players did and I didn't have her in first *among Milwaukee players* heading into the night, but POTW. A double-double... playing restricted minutes in the first half after being whistled for two quick fouls. She finished the game with two fouls. This was a game that, statistically, the Jaguars ought to have won. They out-rebounded the Panthers 52-43. The Jaguars had more points in the paint, more points off turnovers, and more fast break points. They had a massive advantage in free throw opportunities. The game came down to execution. The Panthers shot the ball better overall, and managed to outlast the Jaguars. This week's Mid Major Top 25 poll should be interesting.
