It was a road game. After shooting more free throws than their opponents did in the first three games, the Panthers shot 12 (and made all of them) compared to 31 shot by BGSU. It was a close game throughout. Neither team had a lead of greater than five points. The Panthers retook the lead with a bit more than three minutes left in the game, and within a minute had expanded the lead to five points at 62-57. Unfortunately, those were the last points the Panthers would score. BGSU had the last seven points of the game. Even so the Panthers had chances at the end. Megan Walstad and Brandi Bisping missed layup attempts late; Walstad's shot could have retaken the lead for the Panthers and Bisping's shot could have sent the game to overtime. The other HL teams that played this afternoon did not fare any better: - Wright State lost to Michigan by 23. The Raiders trailed by 21 points at halftime, played a great third quarter to cut the lead to 12, but ran out of gas in the fourth, and lost 82-59.
- IUPUI led the Notre Dame for the entire first half, and went into the break up 33-25. The Fighting Irish put up 20 points in both the third and fourth quarters, held the Jaguars to 25 points, and won the game 65-58. Macee Williams was held to eight points in scoring.
- Green Bay was swept by North Dakota State in their two game series. The Bison shot .500 from behind the arc, withstanding a fourth quarter rally to push the final margin of their victory to 82-66. Coach Borseth will not be a happy camper losing consecutive games.
- Winless Northern Kentucky stayed that way. The Norse traveled to play the Ohio State Buckeyes. who outscored NKU in all four quarters and won by 33, 96-63.

The Panthers traveled to Green Bay to begin league play, and emerged with a 61-58 win. The Panthers led most of the game, and expanded the lead to as many as 12 points a couple of times in the third quarter. The Phoenix went on a run at the end of the third quarter in to the beginning of the fourth quarter to get the lead to four points two minutes into the fourth. The lead was reduced to one point at 54-53 with 2:47 remaining. The Panthers closed the game by outscoring the Phoenix seven to five the rest of the way.
Megan Walstad lead the way with 16 points and eight rebounds. She was 7-11 from the field overall, and 2-4 from distance. Sydney Staver, who was inserted into the starting lineup, and Bre Cera had 13 ponts apiece. Alyssa Moore had a huge third quarter, scoring seven of her eight points (including a three pointer), and amassing two steals and three assists. She had to enter the game and play extended minutes because McKaela Schmelzer picked up two quick fouls in the early minutes right after halftime.
The Panthera managed to hang on to the win despite a really lopsided advantage to the Phoenix in fouls. The final tally was 17 for the Panthers to 13 for the Phoenix, and that only after the Phoenix were forced to foul at the end of the game trying to keep the game close. It wouldn't have been quite as close if the Panthers had done better at the foul line at the end of the game. They finished 13-16, and all three of those misses were in the fourth quarter.
I had hoped, going into the season, that the team would perform better than predicted. So far, that hope has been fulfilled. This is a solid team, which can legitimately go into Green Bay with the expectation of playing well. The Kress Center is, no doubt, a less intimidating place to play when it's not packed with fans, but with all the experience these players have, they can play with confidence.
The Panthers play the Phoenix again tomorrow at 1:00 p.m.
Elsewhere in the Horizon League, eight of the ten league teams are playing this weekend. Northern Kentucky hosted Robert Morris, who had been unable to play any non-league games; the Norse won 61-33. Wright State traveled to Detroit and beat the Titans 75-55. Oakland hosted UIC, and was leading at the end of the third 57-49. IUPUI is scheduled to host Purdue Fort Wayne tonight.

The first half of today's game with Green Bay was brutal. Milwaukee trailed Green Bay by one after one quarter (9-8) and led by one at the half-time (19-18). Both teams picked up the pace in the second half. The Phoenis retook a one point lead at the end of the third quarter and pushed the lead to four early in the fourth quarter. From there it was pretty much all Panthers, as they went on a extended run, scoring 12 consecutive points and 15 of 17 points, to take a nine point lead, then pushed the lead to 11, at 55-44 with about two and one-half minutes left. Green Bay had another run in them, cutting the lead to 55-50 with a 1:11 remaining. From that point, the Panthers salted the game away at the free-throws line.
Megan Walstad had another big game, finishing with a game-high 19 points, a career high 13 rebounds (seven of those were offensive rebounds), two blocks and a steal, and escaped with only two fouls. She is flourishing in this offense, so far, leading the way altough she is not being counted on to carry the team. Bre Cera was next in scoring nine points, followed by Brandi Bisping and McKaela Schmelzer with eight each. The Panthers hit nine three-point shots, a high for this season.
Next up for the Panthers is a pair of home games against Robeert Morris, who lost two games to NKU this weekend.

Walstad for Player of the Week?
Lindsey Duvall was great for NKU yesterday, but a lot quieter today.

Walstad for Player of the Week? Lindsey Duvall was great for NKU yesterday, but a lot quieter today. Macee Williams of IUPUI probably has the inside track for POTW in any given week. The Jaguars also won two this weekend, and Williams led her teams in scoring both games. Walstad would be a good choice, though.

IUPUI rolls PFW with or without Williams. I don't disagree...but Williams is a two-time defending Player-of-theYear, gunning for her third award. Don't be surprised if she Is named PotW a few times this season over players like Walstad or Duval. Megan deserved the award for her play, I agree.

Milwaukee returned home from a five game road trip, on which they finished 4-1 and 2-0 in league play to host Robert Morris, who played no non-league games and had to play their first four league games on the road. After a slow start, the Panthers built momentum and pulled away, finishing with a 64-52 win.
It was a slow-starting game, as both teams played tough defense. The Colonials led 11-8 after one quarter, as they started out shooting a bit better than the Panthers. The Colonials were also getting more rebounds and out-hustling the Panthers. The Panther offense started to get on track in the second quarter, outscoring the Colonials by three to end the second quarter tied at 30. Megan Walstad led the way, scoring the Panthers' first nine points of the second quarter, and 11 of the team's 22 points. RMU continued to hit shots, and expanded their lead to as high as four points. An Angie Cera three-point make in the final seconds pulled the Panthers into a tie.
Angie Cera continued to play well in the third quarter, as the Panthers took control of the game. They outscored the Colonials 18-12, getting balanced scoring.
The Panthers put the game out of reach in the fourth quarter, outscoring the Colonials 16-10, behind six more points from Angie Cera, who finished the game with 11 points, a season and career high. Coming off a league Player of the Week award, Walstad finished with a game-high 18 points on 10-14 shooting (2-4 from three-point range), and two blocks, in 30 minutes of playing time.

The Panthers led today's game against Robert Morris from beginning to end. Milwaukee scored the first seven points of the game in the first two minutes. Megan Walstad started off with a layup and a three-point shot, followed by a transition basket from Brandi Bisping, prompting the Colonials to call a time out 1:51 into the game. As was the case with last weekend, the rest of the first half of the second game in a two-game series was played in fits and starts. Milwaukee managed just five points for the remaining 8:09 of the first quarter. The Colonials managed only five points over that span, so the score was 12-5, Milwaukee.
The second quarter was an exercise in futility. Both teams managed only six points each, the Panthers on 2-14 shooting, going 0-7 on three-point shots. There were 15 fouls called in the quarter, although each team shot only two free-throws. The Colonials' half-time score of 11 points set a record for the fewest points allowed in the first half of a game, eclipsing the 12 points allowed to Marquette earlier this season. Bre Cera had four of the six Panther points in the quarter. She had six points at the half, a total matched by Walstad.
As also was the case in the previous league games, both teams improved considerably in the second half. Robert Morris went on a run early in the quarter, and reduced the lead to two points. After the Panthers opened the quarter with four points to push the lead to eleven at 22-11, the Colonials went on a 11-2 run, to get the lead to 24-22. The run equaled the Colonial's output in the game to that point. The Panthers responded with 13 consecutive points, including eight points from Bisping, six of those from free-throws. Robert Morris had only three points in the rest of the quarter, and the Panthers finished the quarter with a 39-25 lead.
The Panthers outscored the Colonials 17-12 in the fourth quarter to finish a 19 point win, 56-37. Bisping led the way 14 points and eight rebounds. Walstad nearly had another double-double with 13 points and nine rebounds. In a less lopsided win, she might have managed at least one more rebound, but with the game in hand, Coach Rechlicz subbed freely. All twelve players who were available played. Lior Halevi scored her first two points in a Panther uniform at the free-throw line.
The Panthers are now 7-1 the season and 4-0 in league play. They get the rest of the month off, before traveling to Detroit to play the Titans on January 1st and 2nd. The Titans beat UIC this afternoon, which is the only split of a two-game league series in the Horizon League so far, although Wright State appears to have bounced back from their loss yesterday to Oakland, leading 64-41 halfway through the fourth quarter of their game today.

Yeah that first half was painful lol.
Really exciting start to the season!
...and this week I'm predicting Macee Williams to miss out on POTW again. Lindsey Duvall from NKU gets it IMO...Williams probably gets POTY as a career achievement if she keeps doing what she's doing, but IUPUI dominating so thoroughly she doesn't need to play the fourth quarter is letting other players get the weekly stuff lol.

That, to me, is the most impressive aspect of IUPUI's team this year, the balance. I haven't looked much at the stats, but it seems they have two or three other players who can score from other spots on the floor, so you can't beat the Jaguars simply by packing the lane to stop Williams. The Detroit series will be interesting after playing Green Bay and Robert Morris, both of whom have reputations for defense. The Titans appear to be wanting to run up and down the court, although they lost a pair if games to Wright State by twenty points each, and scored considerably fewer points than in the rest of the young season. The Titans put up 72 points in both games with UIC, winning one.

You're two-for-two. Duvall is PotW for the week. The next scheduled league games are on January 1st. A full slate of games is scheduled: - Wright State (3-1) travels to Youngstown State. It will be Youngstown State's season debut (if they don't have more COVID problems).
- Cleveland State (0-2) travels to play Northern Kentucky (4-0).
- UIC (1-3) travels to play Purdue Fort Wayne (0-4).
- Milwaukee (4-0) travels to play Detroit Mercy (1-3).
- Green Bay (0-2) travels to play Oakland (3-1), and
- IUPUI (4-0) travels to play Robert Morris (0-4).
