The 2 revenue sports, executed properly, can subsidize the other programs. And not through budget or through the .5-1M or so that can come from a big NCAA Run (for a Power 5 conference). The $ comes from donations (many small ones that add up big in the aggregate, or you're lucky and have an alum like T. Boone Pickens.... or Satya Nadella). One addt'l obvious source is the university budget (increasing the Athletics budget who increases the MBB budget along with other atheltics programs)* as well, as has happened in the past. Enrollment increase$ when the popularity of UWM increase$. The university budget increases when enrollment increases. If basketball helps enrollment, why then can the university not scratch the hoops program back in return. Like it or not it is a symbiotic relationship the university/educational mission and the popularity war for the hearts and minds of young kids who may want to further their studies at Milwaukee... because they saw our students going nuts on ESPN/CBS and they wanted to be a part of something like that- something beyond the academic part of college. *we can't rely on the UW System and the State government anymore; that sh*tp sailed and ain't ever coming back- it's purely Bucky's piggy bank and table scraps for the commoners like us.

*though I recall reading in the JS, PantherU.com and elsewhere that UWM and/or the UWM AD had already earmarked student seg fees of $6-10M for a new practice facility separate from the KC/Pavilion in what, 2011 or 2012?! That just quietly disappeared under the current regime (I heard more recently in Milwaukee Business Journal that the amount of funds was halved and the project was "scoped back" whatever in the hell that means... so what happened? Was that remaining half eliminated? Many Panther fans would like to know... many whom may return if they see that our proverbial (university athletics) Golden Goose is being nurtured again.) Oh I see now. The writing is on the wall (UW System is holding University of Milwaukee back- we cannot even raise our own funds (get a loan without the approval of the Wizard of Oz in Madison)) !! It is not a matter of if but when. As much as I have fond memories of "UWM", "University of Milwaukee" (like Chicago or Pittsburgh)- and independent management is the way to go.

Sorry that there's an apparent need to resuscitate this thread, but the blowback to Fran's most recent thread creation would seem to strongly indicate that there is. Irrespective of how you feel about him, we simply can't abide a program that sends its band, cheerleaders, in-game host, P.A. announcer and, for all we know, concessionaires and ushers to a damn women's game at a time when the men's team is playing. Period! End of story! There can be NO argument!!!

How is blowback against Fran's recent thread where he hoped Amanda would take responsibility for the recent futility of the program and its current state equivalent to saying the men's basketball program is NOT the money maker from an athletic standpoint? Most of the blowback is that it's not an appropriate venue to make such statements. I don't think there's anyone here who actively participates who thinks anything other than the men's bball program is THE moneymaker for athletics, and it has a number of benefits outside of athletics.

Why won’t our AD say it? Why are some people here completely okay with her not saying it? And why are people here apoplectic at the idea that it would be great if she would say it in public, with the mikes on, in front of our new coach, so that he and we can HOLD her to it?
Let me guess, based on everything that has happened in her nine year tenure we should simply trust that she’ll say it quietly into a paper bag in the privacy of her office with the door locked — and that’s just as good, right? Because we don’t want her “taking anything away” from the new Coach.
Wrong.

I disagree that the introductory press conference for Coach Lundy is the appropriate venue for the AD to discuss her sins. P.S. How did the Badgers do today?

Would it be nice to hear? Sure. But does it help Bart Lundy win basketball games?? No, so that's why I am okay with her not saying it. My only concern is Bart Lundy winning basketball games.

My only concern is Bart Lundy winning basketball games. Then AB's continued occupation of the office of the Director of Athletics should concern you. But if you find it distasteful or you want to stay positive, I completely understand and I would direct you toward helping the cause we can all agree on: Attack Apathy

But if you find it distasteful or you want to stay positive, I completely understand and I would direct you toward helping the cause we can all agree on: Attack Apathy In my opinion, the most powerful tool to attack apathy is to win. When the program is winning, it'll be a lot easier to entice students to games, engage with alumni and connect with the greater Milwaukee community. It appears that Coach Lundy has the credentials and the head coaching experience to turn around this program and to start winning again. With the new transfer rules a quick turnaround could be possible. Also, despite all of the negativity clouding the program recently, the fact that new practice facility will open in Fall 2022 should be a great asset for Coach Lundy as he rebuilds the program and starts to win.
