Does everyone here understand why men's basketball HAS to be the bellwether for our athletics program?

That's IT! It FUNDS everything else. I'll cut to the chase: we can't AFFORD to have someone in charge who treats other sports like they're equal (or superior) to men's basketball.

What did I miss? Or is this just a continuation?

What did I miss? Or is this just a continuation? The band was at the women's game. Lead to no pep band at the men' game. Killed any chance to have an atmosphere at the Arena. To bad as there was a nice pocket of students at the game.

I've supported the department in almost everything it's done, but choosing to not have the band and *all* of the spirit teams at *all* men's basketball games shows a lack of competence on their part.
*Edited for clarity*

The cheer squads and part of the dance team was at the men's game.

The cheer squads and part of the dance team was at the men's game. Part? Sounds like partial commitment to men's basketball.

Never forget this, guys. I was thinking about this again last night and this morning. Men's basketball is what matters.

And this is not chauvinistic or "only basketball/football matter" machismo- this is simply reality. Working towards social and structural change to increase equity is a good thing (ie. WNBA is on the rise, US Women's Soccer team mania). But you have to work within the parameters of reality. D1 Programs that have really good WBB and Volleyball and Swimming and Soccer and other less/non-rev sports tend to also have really well-funded and successful men's Basketball and Football teams that connect hundreds of thousands of alumni whom, were it not for Michigan Football on CBS or Marquette Basketball on FOX Sports(, let's be honest,) otherwise would not give much a whit about their alma mater. The 2 revenue sports, executed properly, can subsidize the other programs. And not through budget or through the .5-1M or so that can come from a big NCAA Run (for a Power 5 conference). The $ comes from donations (many small ones that add up big in the aggregate, or you're lucky and have an alum like T. Boone Pickens.... or Satya Nadella). Them's the brakes. PS: The attached gives you an idea of the distribution of NCAA Madness money to conferences/schools. These are total payouts by conference from 2012 (the payments are based on 5 year rolling averages of "units" (1 unit=1 NCAA Game appearance)) but the amounts can't be drastically higher today. It looks like at most, even if we made a run, we wouldn't receive much (unless all the other Horizon Teams started getting at-larges and making runs, increasing the 5-year rolling average)- not exactly something you can rely on to fund the program every year. Donations, donations, donations. If you have the means and really want to see the Panthers Hoops succeed at a high level? Donate to the Panther Fund and earmark all or some of the donation specifically for Men's Basketball*. *though I recall reading in the JS, PantherU.com and elsewhere that UWM and/or the UWM AD had already earmarked student seg fees of $6-10M for a new practice facility separate from the KC/Pavilion in what, 2011 or 2012?! That just quietly disappeared under the current regime (I heard more recently in Milwaukee Business Journal that the amount of funds was halved and the project was "scoped back" whatever in the hell that means... so what happened? Was that remaining half eliminated? Many Panther fans would like to know... many whom may return if they see that our proverbial (university athletics) Golden Goose is being nurtured again.) If the Uni could answer to that (that's a big deal for recruiting- look to Northwestern Football's Practice field and facilities overlooking Lake Michigan; it is a recruiting Shangri-La)- and do something to demonstrate a real and tangible commitment to our only chance of a nationally recognized university brand, I'd expect donations would pick up considerably. 'Hard to throw money at a question mark, ya know. "Path to Prominence" does not give me hope, personally. We need specific steps and $$$$$$$ to support the execution of those steps. The economy will pick back up the next 12-24 months. I'm really interested to see if we sink, or surf. secure.supportuwm.org/s/1902/m19/interior-dev.aspx?sid=1902&gid=3&pgid=666&cid=1653

Green Bay is an exception, but I wonder how much the Phoenix women's basketball program pays its way.
According to the record book at the GB website, the GB women have sold out the Kress Center three times, one of those was against Milwaukee. The record book lists a sellout as an attendance of just over 4000 in attendance. I am pretty sure that GB is at or very near the top of the league in attendance generally, so I'm sure they make more money from ticket sales than any other institution in the Horizon League. But that wouldn't necessarily amount to a large amount of money.

What's the largest paid crowd in our women's basketball history, 'heap? Officially the Klotsche currently seats 3500, but the all time record is 4137 against Green Bay. Odds are at least half of those in attendance were Green Bay fans. Average attendance at Panther home games last year was around 500. Or perhaps I should say tickets sold My point was Green Bay Women's BB routinely draws far more fans to home games, so their ticket revenue would be higher. I have no exact idea idea how much of the cost of Phoenix Women's BB is covered by what the program takes in in ticket revenue, nor how much of that costs is subsidized by the men's program. Comparing the GB Women's and Men's home attendance for last season, the men had higher attendance per game, but the difference was smaller at Green Bay than I expected. That's probably a function of the consistent success the Phoenix Women's program has enjoyed, relative to the Men's program.
