Time for my annual "All-state" team of the five best players on the four state D1 teams. My criteria are my own intuitive mix of factors such as production, leadership, value to the team and pure talent. It's not a "positional" team. YMMV.
So here goes:
Ethan Happ (MOP) Andrew Rowsey Markus Howard Brad Davison Khalil Small
Bluntly, this is the weakest five I can remember in the last 20 years. All five had significant weaknesses. It's no accident that none of the state's teams were good enough to make the tournament. The talent just wasn't there. Happ is the only player who would have made the squad in most (but not all) of the last ten years; he's much better than the rest of this group. The Milwaukee players I considered were Brock, Bryce and Bell. Any of them could make a case next year along with guys like the Hausers at MU, Trice, King and Ruevers at UW, and Hankerson and Cohen (I think he got another year) at GB.
Just a pallid year for state D1 basketball.
