MILWAUKEE - Craig Mallace, a senior on the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee men's soccer team, was drafted today by the Milwaukee Wave in the 2007 Major Indoor Soccer League College Draft.
The MISL draft consisted of five rounds, beginning with a territorial round. Milwaukee selected sixth of eight teams in each of the rounds, choosing Mallace with its territorial selection.
"Craig will fit in very well with the Wave organization," UWM head coach Jon Coleman said. "He can obviously be an exceptional player that can help them in their quest to win another championship. We are all very excited for Craig and this accomplishment."
Mallace, a two-time All-Horizon League Second Team choice, led the Panthers in assists and scoring this past fall, wrapping up a brilliant career in a UWM uniform. He helped lead the Panthers to the second round of the NCAA Tournament in each of his first three seasons, winning three tournament titles and two regular season crowns.
"This feels great right now," Mallace said, when reached for comment after the draft. "This is a dream come true for me. I have been doing this since I was a little kid and it's almost the final piece of the jigsaw. But, I wouldn't have been able to do it without my teammates and my parents. I want to thank them and all of the coaches - especially Jon Coleman - for having faith in me and my playing abilities."
In a press release from the Wave, head coach and director of soccer operations Keith Tozer also commented on drafting Mallace. "Craig had a very good college career with the Panthers," Tozer said. "He was coached by Louie Bennett and then Jon Coleman, so he had very good coaching in his four years there. And we're in need of a left-side defender, since we only have Troy Dusosky."
The Wave is a four-time MISL league champion that has been in operation every season since 1984-85. They have made the playoffs every year since 1992-93. Former Panther Chad Dombrowski is a current member of the team.
