Another academic year has come and gone and we are only a few weeks away from our fall sport student-athletes reporting to campus for preseason training.
The 2015-16 year was another successful one for Milwaukee Athletics. In the fall our women’s soccer team, under the direction of first-year head coach Troy Fabiano, captured the Horizon League regular season championship for the 15th time in the last 16 years and Leah Holmes became the first Panther ever to win the Horizon League Women’s Cross Country Championship individual title. Picked to finish ninth, the women’s basketball team surpassed all expectations and recorded a 19-13 overall record en route to a second-place Horizon League showing and a WNIT berth for the program’s first postseason appearance since 2006. Despite having 22 newcomers on the roster, the baseball program topped 30 wins for the second straight season and finished in second place.
Our student-athletes also shined at the national level, on the biggest of stages, as well.
Senior high jumper Brett Pozolinski capped his illustrious career by earning First Team All-America accolades during the indoor track and field season, then grabbed second team honors at the NCAA Outdoor Championships, where his brother, Nate, secured Honorable Mention All-America status in the hurdles.
For a remarkable 17th consecutive year, we finished among the top three in the Horizon League’s McCafferty Trophy standings.
Academically, our student-athletes continue to perform at a high level and make us all proud to be Panthers. During the Spring 2016 term, our Panthers posted a 3.226 grade-point average, marking the 32nd consecutive semester they have achieved a collective mark of 3.0 or higher. In addition, 66 student-athletes notched a 3.8 GPA in the Spring 2016 semester, with 30 of those individuals compiling a perfect 4.0 mark.
For the third straight year, Milwaukee also produced multiple Academic All-America selections as Kelsey Holbert (women’s soccer) and Luke Meeteer (baseball) were recognized for their achievements in the classroom.
In April, we announced the hiring of LaVall Jordan as our new men’s basketball coach. Coach Jordan and his staff have been hard at work on the recruiting trail and getting to know our supporters.
I hope you have a relaxing and healthy summer and look forward to seeing you back on campus this fall.
