Someone mentioned to me 'progress' after the loss to Oakland. They want to see progress, and they think this team is no better than the last bunch under Jeter.
In Jeter's tenure, how many blowout losses do we have each year? How many times have the Panthers lost by 15 points or more?
In general, I think this is a pretty good indicator of how good a team is, and how they stat positive in the face of adversity.
Number of Blowout Losses (15+ points)
2005-06: 2
2006-07: 9
2007-08: 5
2008-09: 5
2009-10: 2
2010-11: 8
2011-12: 4
2012-13: 12
2013-14: 8
2014-15: 8
2015-16: 0
What I like about this team is that they stay positive when things go south. They keep fighting, they don't let themselves get too down. I think this is more than just coming back from big deficits. I think this is also apparent at the line. You guys know how it is in the crowd at the arena when the free throws aren't falling. Everyone groans. In the past I've felt like the team would feed on that negative energy and turn 1-for-4 at the line into 4-for-20. This team starts 1-for-4 from the line, they're finishing 13-for-17, or 18-for-23. They don't give up on themselves. I like that.
I think we should also respond positively in the Arena at games when we face adversity. I think they can feed on positive energy and run with it.
Obviously this doesn't have much to do with the WSU game, it's just a thought I've had. We're an incredibly cynical fan base. Maybe if we can flip that around, they can feed off that and get better in games.
That said, these close losses are just killers. One more free throw here, one quick missed three that would have been an inside basket and foul there, and they lose. Milwaukee is 4-6 in games decided by less than 5 points. They're incredibly efficient on offense despite the fact that they fall in love with the three and take too many quick outside shots. If they are selective with their threes and push the ball inside more, they're incredibly hard to stop. Four teams have scored 80 points on Wright State this season. We're two of them.
This might be one of our worst defensive teams ever, and they should be 21-2, 9-1 in the Horizon League. sh*t, if this team had 2010-11's defense, you could be watching a Final Four team.
But shoddy defense is rearing its ugly head. That's why we're losing close games. Getting an assist from the refs is just the cherry on top.
