Hey guys, this is aimed only at those here who attended the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. How did/do you refer to our school and our program in routine discourse?
This is not a trick question and it's not intended as a rant against the university or to initiate a re-naming movement.
I truly just simply want to know. For my part, I think that I've only referred to it by two names.

To friends from the city and sports fans, always UWM. To people not from the area and perhaps not basketball fans, UW-Milwaukee. I like them both. Don't care for the "Milwaukee" branding.

UWM or Milwaukee. Period. I would no more say I went to "UW-Milwaukee" than I would say I went to "UW-Madison," which I also attended. The JS's "UW-Milwaukee" stylebook reference is now so out of the mainstream it seems like they are purposely trying to be irritating by keeping it. The JS Sports desk editors appear to believe that if they were to use the SAME reference that has now become de rigeur for other newspapers, broadcasters, etc. for our sports teams -- simply, "Milwaukee", just like it says on our uniforms, and in the ads we PAY for on JS properties -- that their readers are so stupid that they will wonder why the Bucks are playing Valpo.

"Wisconsin" refers only to sports teams, and only because of a long history of being called the "Wisconsin Badgers" before the university began to be called UW-Madison. If you watch the university-sponsored commercials during a Badger sporting event, the university is always referred to by its formal name of UW-Madison. In the same way, i refer to the university at which I work as UW-Milwaukee or UWM, and the sports teams as the Milwaukee Panthers in general usage.

I only call the team "The School of Hard Knocks" and then punch them in the face.

It's always UWM or Milwaukee for me.
People who know me pretty much know I'm referencing the Panthers and not the Bucks or Brewers when I say Milwaukee. It's probably pretty easy for an outsider to tell who I'm talking about just from the context of the conversation.
I say UWM when people ask where I went to school, where I got my degree from, or any other related question.

I think it's easy to go to UWM because in the area if you say Milwaukee, you could be talking about damn near anything. We need a secondary brand for the locals. I might have a suggestion... try this.

I use UWM and UW-Milwaukee when referencing the academic question where did you go to school. I use UWM and Milwaukee Panthers when referencing athletics. I went to UWM in the 80's and don't recall seeing that 80's logo in the referenced by BPU. That is my new desktop image!

I've said it before, and I'll say it again, there's a damn good reason UW-Madison won't allow ANY media mentions OR the sale of any Bucky athletic merchandise with a hyphen anywhere in, on, or near it. Why? Because they have leaders with foresight who understand the power of branding. The people in charge at Milwaukee? Well, let's just say they haven't caught on yet. Will they ever?
To answer your school reference question...
I say Milwaukee 95% of the time, and UWM 5% of the time, because I'm human, and old dumb habits die hard.
Maybe Jimmy is right, we need to phase out UWM for something like UMil or U of M.
Because:
A) the fans, the coaches, the student-athletes, and now a good chunk of the national media prefer Milwaukee over any variation with a hyphen. B) clearly history has shown that we can't have it both ways. UWM begets UW-Milwaukee, Wisconsin-Milwaukee, WI-Milwaukee, and all the other clumsy and/or incorrect variations we see listed/printed/spoken on a weekly basis every single basketball season.
It's not getting any better. It's not going away. When will we have leaders willing to be honest with us and themselves, and address this issue?
Cliff notes: UW-Madison does it right because they're smart and understand branding. Our administration and A.D.? Not so much.

Also, IN before anyone can mention the irony of my avatar picture. But seriously, how cool would UMil or U of M look down the side of that building for our next Sweet 16 appearance? BRANDING BRANDING BRANDING BRANDING!

UWM or Milwaukee or just Panthers.
Don't care how the JS refers to us as I don't consider that a reputable newspaper anyway.
