Goetz earned a spot on the First Team as an outfielder, with senior first baseman Joe Nowicki joining him on the prestigious First Team squad. Two Panthers were All-League Second Team choices: senior pitcher Rick Cavaiani and junior outfielder Ross McCoy. Freshman catcher Dan Buchholz rounded out the list of UWM winners by earning a place on the league All-Newcomer Team.
Goetz earned Player of the Year honors after a record-breaking regular season. He currently leads the nation with a .498 batting average and also tops the country in on-base percentage and hits. He is trying to become the first player in NCAA Division I history to bat over .500 in a season since 1991, and the first to do so with more than 100 at bats since 1987. He has already set UWM season records for hits, doubles and hitting streaks this year and is on pace for new standards in triples, runs scored, total bases, walks and on-base percentage.
He has hit safely in 52 of 54 games in 2006 and has reached base safely in 62-consecutive games dating back to last season. He has hitting streaks of 32 and 27 games to his credit this season, both of them breaking the former school mark of 22. He leads the Horizon League in average (.498), runs (63), hits (106), doubles (23), triples (5), walks (40), stolen bases (17) and on-base percentage (.583).
He becomes the third Panther to receive the league's top honor, joining Ben Stanczyk in 2004 and Darin Haugom in 2001.
Nowicki earns All-League First Team honors for the second-straight season, as he was chosen as an outfielder in 2005. He has already set career-highs in most every category this season and leads the Panthers in home runs and runs batted in. He ended the regular season ranked fourth in the league in average (.375), second in runs (58), second in doubles (20), second in home runs (11), fourth in steals (9), fourth in slugging (.639) and 10th in on-base percentage (.426).
After a slow start to the campaign due to a preseason injury, Cavaiani has not missed a beat since his first start March 28. He sports an 8-1 record and recently tied the UWM mark with his seventh-consecutive victory in his last outing. He is tied for the league lead in wins and is eighth in ERA (4.28), fourth in innings pitched (78.1), third in strikeouts (64) and seventh in opponents batting average.
McCoy receives Second Team honors for the second time in his career, also earning the distinction in 2004 as a freshman. He has hit .320 on the season, with a career-high 11 home runs and 47 runs batted in. He ranks second in the league in home runs (11), fifth in slugging (.602), ninth in runs (41) and fifth in runs batted in (47). He put his name in the UWM record book with a prolific day against Chicago State April 12, tying school records for hits and RBI in a 6-for-6, 8-RBI day.
Buchholz hit .278 in 27 games as a freshman, making 19 starts behind the plate. He threw out seven of 21 would-be base stealers and had a memorable three-game stretch in late April where he had game-winning hits against Northwestern and Carroll College and a four-RBI day against Wright State.
Rounding out the list of specialty award winners was Wright State's Joe Smith as Pitcher of the Year, UIC's Chad Schroeder as Newcomer of the Year and the Flames Mike Dee as Horizon League Coach of the Year.
Milwaukee starts action in the league tournament with a 3 p.m. game on Thursday.
