INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - Senior Aaron Sorenson tied the school record with 13 strikeouts and senior Joe Nowicki went 5-for-5 with five runs batted in to lead the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee baseball team to an 8-3 victory over Butler in game one of a doubleheader on Saturday. The Panthers (31-23, 18-12 Horizon) earned the sweep of the Bulldogs (18-34, 9-21 Horizon) when they recorded a 9-5 victory in game two.
Sorenson (5-3) pitched eight complete innings, with the 13 strikeouts tying the school strikeout mark that current senior Korey Keller, Ben Stanczyk and Sorenson own (Sorenson also whiffed 13 versus Butler April 8 of last season). He walked just one batter, allowing two earned runs on six hits.
"Aaron was fantastic today," UWM assistant head coach Scott Doffek said. "He was working both sides of the plate, getting ahead of batters. He was in command from start to finish."
Sorenson struck out seven of the first 10 batters and was never in trouble. He did give up two home runs and an unearned run, but outside of that he did not allow a runner past first base in the game.
Nowicki set a career-high with five hits, finishing with 14 total bases on three doubles and two home runs. The three doubles tied the school mark for two-baggers in a game while the five RBI tied his career-best.
Tied 2-2 in the fifth inning of game one, Nowicki doubled with one out and scored on junior Rob Brockel's sixth home run of the season to make it 4-2.
Butler tallied an unearned run in its half of the fifth to trim UWM's lead to 4-3, but it was Nowicki again in the sixth to put the game away. He launched his second home run of the game and 11th of the season in the frame, a three-run shot to center field that extended the advantage to 8-3.
The Panthers finished the game with 12 hits, with Brockel (2-for-5) and senior Matt Curran (2-for-3) adding multi-hit performances in addition to Nowicki. Senior Mike Goetz's 32-game hitting streak was snapped, just the second game this season he did not get a hit. With a walk in the game, however, he did extend his streak of reaching base safely to 61 games. No Bulldog batter had more than one hit.
The second game followed the same storyline as the first. Tied 2-2 in the fifth inning, Nowicki added a two-run double to give UWM a 4-2 lead. Nowicki would later come around to score to make it 5-2. The Panthers would go on to add two more in each of the sixth and seventh innings, holding on for the season sweep of the Bulldogs.
UWM finished with 15 more hits, as five different players recorded more than one in the contest. Junior Kyle Silver went 3-for-4 and Brockel added a 3-for-5 performance to lead the way. Goetz, sophomore Jesse Hart and junior Ross McCoy all added two apiece. Tony Barnes was 3-for-5 with three runs batted in to lead Butler.
Junior Robert Michalkiewicz (2-6) earned the win with 5.0 innings of work, allowing three runs on four hits. He struck out three and walked three. BU's Craig Costello (2-4) was tagged with the loss, giving up seven runs on 10 hits in 5.2 innings.
With the victories, the Panthers finished 18-12 in Horizon League action. Heading into play today, they were tied with Wright State for second place. Front-running UIC helped UWM out, defeating Wright State 7-0 in game two after the Raiders had won game one 7-4. That makes WSU 17-13 in league games and gives Milwaukee the No. 2 seed in next week's Horizon League Tournament.
"It's tough to sweep anyone, let alone inside the league," Doffek said. "But the guys came out and played hard. The pitchers did a great job and the hitters put up crooked numbers to keep the pressure on. They responded when we needed them to."
As the two-seed in the Horizon League Tournament, they will earn a bye from Wednesday's games and first play on Thursday at 3 p.m. The team will be in search of its fourth NCAA Tournament appearance since the 1999 season.
