I don't know about everyone else, but my optimism has grown after last night's scrimmage. McHorter will be a great addition, and will make Jordan Aaron even more of a threat. Panoske is still a beast defensively. Wichmann gives us another option to hit the open three (assuming he doesn't redshirt, which I hope he doesn't). And the Prahl twins have some work, but are big guys for freshman. Can't wait to see them develop. I don't know much about Matt Tiby, but I like his size and I hear he's aggressive, which we desperately need.
In any event, I don't blame everyone for picking us to finish last in the preseason polls. Between our dismal record last year and the 11 new faces, how can anyone give us a chance. But if our guys can work together and get a nice feel for each others' games, we might end up being a lot better than people expect. I don't anticipate us looking great during out first two games (Loyola and Davidson), but hopefully we'll see a big improvement by the time we get DePaul at home.

MILWAUKEE - The first public look at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee men's basketball team produced plenty of things to be excited about for head coach Rob Jeter and Panther fans. The Milwaukee offense looked to be ahead of schedule in the annual Full-Court Club Intrasquad Scrimmage at the Klotsche Center. Veterans like Kyle Kelm and Thierno Niang got extended action in returning from injury-plagued campaigns of a season ago. Freshman Cody Wichmann showed off his as-advertised shooting touch, and sophomore J.J. Panoske was blocking shots just as he did last year, when he set a new school record. And, there's a chance for even bigger steps going forward, as projected starters Jordan Aaron (ankle) and Matt Tiby (knee) sat out with minor injuries while news came out that senior transfer Malcolm Moore may be ready for full contact action as soon as next week. The Gold would up beating the Black, 81-73, and Jeter was pleased with his group's first performance before an audience. "I thought the ball movement was good and I thought the spacing was good, plus our ability to touch the post ... I thought those were the things that stood out," Jeter said. "One team probably had a little more athleticism than the other, but it doesn't take athleticism to really be efficient with what we're trying to do. The ball seemed to move and our movement seemed to be better than what I would expect at this time."
While junior transfer Steve McWhorter played in last season intrasquad game and even scored 19 points in that game, tonight's contest was the first time most fans were seeing him in the starting point guard role. It's something that should launch the Milwaukee offense and defense forward. "It's more of sharing the ball and getting other guys touches," Jeter said of the addition of McWhorter. "Jordan is a scoring guard, so whenever we're able to get those two guys on the court together, they can compliment each other well. Plus, he's a little bigger, so he can take some pressure off defensively from the little smaller player we have in Jordan. I think he does a nice job of running the team and creating more of a calmness on the floor. He's under control, does what he can do, and shares the ball pretty well." As for the injuries, the news is much more good than bad. Tiby and Aaron should both be back in practice by the weekend, while Moore appears ready for full practice action soon. Plus, Northern Illinois transfer Akeem Springs missed the scrimmage with a minor injury but should also be back in workouts shortly. "If it was a game they could play," Jeter said of Aaron and Tiby, who will likely be in he starting five next Thursday against Marian. "But obviously, if we have this time where we can make sure guys are feeling their best, let's concentrate on that. It was more precautionary than anything else." As for Moore, who could be a nice extra piece inside if healthy: "He's close to being able to go with full contact," Jeter said. "I think next week we'll start full contact with him, so he's progressing well." In the end, it was some improvement on offense - even with key parts missing - that seemed to be the most encouraging thing at the Klotsche Center Thursday night. "I think a lot of our lack of offense last year was due to fatigue, and we just couldn't sub guys in the way we can now," Jeter said. "But I do like the fact that we were able to knock down open shots tonight. We're not going to overpower people with our athleticism, but I think if we can get the ball to move and we can move bodies and create long close outs, we can have opportunities to move guys out of the paint so then we can throw it inside."

Looks right to me. Looks like a much better bench from last year. Brett Prahl could have more of a role.
