Heads up, I'll be on 1250 WSSP in about 20 minutes to talk about the mine and Rob Demovsky's stories yesterday.

I thought it was funny how you were saying Milwaukee Panthers and WSSP was saying UWM. They didn't put two & two together.

But, BP is not the voice of the university and should not be confused as the voice of the university. Also, those are just part of our "current struggles," just one opinion from someone outside the department.

Also, those are just part of our "current struggles," just one opinion from someone outside the department. I may be reading this the wrong way, but I read his phrase "for the university" as someone pro-UWM and not speaking for UWM. I've never claimed to speak for the university and if anyone thinks I am, I'll clarify that I don't.

The lines do get blurred at times. That said, I thought your conversation was otherwise great, and I hope UWM sports can be discussed more often on local radio stations.
BTW -- Finally saw the Kress Center this weekend and became instantly jealous. The arena isn't bad at all, but I know we can and must do a lot better (boxes, etc.). BP -- what was the cost of just the arena portion of the Kress Center?

BP -- what was the cost of just the arena portion of the Kress Center? I know the full cost came to about $33 million for the entire facility, which is adjusted for inflation about 57 million in 2013 dollars. The arena is just a small part of it, maybe half. It would be different for Milwaukee; for one, we're going to have to take apart an existing structure or work inside the standing one. I'm not sure if that adds or takes away from the cost, MWU definitely has more experience than I do. The great thing about the Kress Center isn't the arena, but the fact that both basketball teams and the volleyball team can practice separately and isolated from other teams. It makes instruction a million times easier.

It would be different for Milwaukee; for one, we're going to have to take apart an existing structure or work inside the standing one. I'm not sure if that adds or takes away from the cost, MWU definitely has more experience than I do. Not sure about the 57 million number I figured it to about 37 million (http://www.usinflationcalculator.com/). I never could find detailed data on the Kress Center's construction cost. Perhaps one of the GB folks who frequent the site could point us in the right direction. Even if we did find the punch sheet, unless Kahler broke down various options for UWGB, it would be difficult to separate the building's arena functions from other spaces. Shared uses corridors, bathrooms, structural components, etc. it would be messy. My best guess without seeing detailed numbers would be to assume that 2/3 - 3/4 of the 33 million price tag was devoted to the "arena" portion. So the second part of your question is leading me down a long winded explanation, I will try to be as concise as possible. If you don't care to read any further the answer is YES with a BUT, and NO with a MAYBE. Complete demos tend to be cheaper if major structural changes or building form changes are so completely drastic that it doesn't make sense to keep the original shell/structure. In a successful project, reuse and recycling of old construction materials should be executed at a high level. Working inside an existing shell can be desirable if the building form isn't changing much or at all (saves on weather proofing) and is more historically sensitive. Generally, this option is also more ecologically sustainable. In our scenario we're talking about a low water table so you'd have to pump water and sink caissons/piles to support the building. That's on top of keeping the shell of the building laterally sound. It all depends on the design. Another consideration we should ask ourselves: is the building you're potentially retro-fitting architecturally, socially, or economically significant enough to be worth saving?
