Larry Reed. Von McDade. Craig Greene. Marc Mitchell. Shannon Smith. Joah Tucker. Avery Smith. Ricky Franklin. Anthony Hill and so many more.
Believe it or not, many of the best players in the history of the UWM program are from Milwaukee.
Take a look at the roster and count the number of players that hail from the city. It won't take long ...
What is going on? Is it that local players don't want to play here or is it that they're not being recruited?

Trinson White is a Milwaukee kid. If we end up getting Austin Malone-Mitchell, so is he. We're going after Jerrelle DeBerry in the 2014 class. This is one of the few years with a barren roster of Milwaukeeans is all.
It's not like Jeter doesn't recruit the state; James is from Racine, JJ is from Brodhead, Austin is from Madison, Evan is from Cuba City, Kyle is from Randolph. I do think the risk associated with Milwaukee recruits grows higher every year, as MPS goes further and further down the toilet. And maybe the crop has just been thin, Charles Lee aside. And Cleveland State had Norris Cole's legacy to woo him with.

Let's not kid ourselves. There were serious problems with Charlie Lee out of HS. I don't fault them in the slightest for passing on him.
While we all keep getting on Jeter for the lack of MKE HS recruiting rewards on our current roster, let's ask ourselves this: who was Bruce Pearl's best four-year recruit?

While we all keep getting on Jeter for the lack of MKE HS recruiting rewards on our current roster, let's ask ourselves this: who was Bruce Pearl's best four-year recruit? I understand trying to divert from the topic at hand, but the question is a completely irrelevant one. Not to mention the 2004-05 team had 7 players from the Milwaukee Metro Area. Recruiting talented players only gets you so far. Rob has done that in my opinion. The issue is more the development of said players. Bruce didn't have any high impact 4 year recruits. He had a couple rotation players like Mark Pancratz and Allan Hanson. The difference is, he brought in players that had the desire to win and better themselves, and he used that motivation to help them progress as players. He identified these qualities, which is so important. It's clear that while Rob has brought in some talented players from time to time, rarely do they have that will to win and motivation to better themselves. There are several examples of this from the past few years. To me, the inability to detect this in recruits is a major red flag. The lack of Milwaukee players on the roster is troubling to me as well. To me, it doesn't matter if we get them out of high school or as transfers. It's important to get some of the players on your roster. We are the Milwaukee Panthers after all...

This is one of the few years with a barren roster of Milwaukeeans is all. Jerrelle DeBerry is a good player to go after, but he'll likely go to a BCS school. It doesn't appear that we are recruiting Austin Malone-Mitchell either. Rivals isn't always the most accurate SuperKing...

I do think the risk associated with Milwaukee recruits grows higher every year, as MPS goes further and further down the toilet. And maybe the crop has just been thin. No one said anything about not recruiting the state. We're getting plenty -- too many? -- players from places like Brodhead, Cuba City and Randolph. What we're talking about is the absence of skill-position players from right here in our backyard. And I don't think this topic has been discussed here enough. As for risk, wasn't there some risk with some of the other local products who have landed here through the years like Roderick Johnson, Damion Ninkovic, Avery Smith, Ricky Franklin and Anthony Hill?

Looking back at the glory years of yore, ie Pearl, really it was not Milwaukee kids...Dylan Page, Adrian Tigert (up state) Nate Mielke (Iowa), Ed McCants, Chris Hill, Boo Davis, Jason McCoy, Mark Pancratiz, Justin Letternberger, Clay Tucker, Ronnie Jones, Rob Sanders, ok..Allan Hanson and James Wright but...Derrick Ford, Dan Weiss, Jason Frederick,....etc
Where have the Milwaukee kids like Ant Hill, Ricky Franklin, Avery Smith and others gotten us?? nothing against them but not a single ticket to the big dance unlike the players outlined above. Oh yeah..we got a couple 20 win seasons, a conference championship..oh yeah that is right,, a three way tie for regular season and choke against Butler at home....a one and done NIT loss against Northwestern and a one and done CBI loss against the TCU Horned Frogs....now this....nice going Jeter

Again, to echo what some others have said. It's nice to have some Milwaukee kids, and we definitely could Austin or some of the other local talent on this squad, but what we really need though is a coach who can develop players.
Look at some of the players that kingsteve just listed. Would Derek Ford have went from big time project to asset like he did under Pearl with Jeter? Hell no. Jeter probably wouldn't have even gone after a project player like that, but Pearl was able to turn him into a very key role player. Look at the development of local player James Wright. He was a player that needed plenty of coaching, and he was a very successful local development.
A lot of the Milwaukee kids that we have the ability to recruit are projects. Maybe Rob doesn't think he can coach them up and keep them away from local distractions, and I would probably agree with that. Kudos to Rob for the development of Ant Hill, one of the greatest panthers of all time, but I don't see that type of development happening often with our current coaching situation.

All-time all-City team in UWM history
First team PG -- Marc Mitchell SG -- Von McDade SF -- Craig Greene PF -- Joah Tucker C -- Larry Reed
Second team PG -- Cyrus Caldwell SG -- Ray Perine SF -- Shannon Smith PF -- Roderick Johnson C -- Anthony Hill
You don't absolutely need Milwaukee players, but it sure doesn't hurt.

I hope the Milwaukee coaches are at some high school games tonight. Vincent/King would be a good place to start.
