What do you consider to be the definition of a low major conference? Does the new Horizon League match that description?
The league's RPI is at 22 and falling.
Meanwhile, Sagarin has the league much higher at 12. UIC and Valpo are holding the conference steady and rose to the challenge of the post Butler era.

The RPI is wholly irrelevant until January 1st, and to be honest there are better ratings even at the end of the season like KenPom and the PantherU Horizon League Power Poll Stone Cold Stephen F. Austin is #8 in the RPI today. The Horizon was #1 in the RPI just a couple weeks ago.

True. But, is the Horizon League a low major conference?

I think it is fair to say that we are at the lower end of the mid-majors at this time.

What's most disconcerting about this is that the H League has the No. 31 (or worst) strength of schedule among all Division 1 conferences, according to realtimerpi.com
Other leagues like the A-10, MVC and Mountain West have mandates limiting the scheduling of non-Division 1 and "soft" Division 1 opponents.
Again, what a terrific decision by the league presidents and commissioner to ban Butler from all league championship events in 2012-13 and leave the remaining conference members holding the bag on short notice.

The RPI is wholly irrelevant until January 1st Well close I would say not relevant unti 8 games in or so and then becomes more relevant until January. But if you're talking conference level RPI that becomes meaningless once everyone hits conference play. MAC teams or Horizon Teams eating each other is generally ont going to move the conference up or down.

Low mid-major team in a low mid-major conference

Horizon League is way down as a conference losing Butler. It was the only team respected by people we had. They are gone, and it will be tough to ever get that back. Unless someone steps up and really comes on as a program.

In fact, they thought they were better than Butler last year. Don't worry ... you have your new "National Program".

Low mid-major team in a low mid-major conference Our RPI is 331. Out of 347. I think our "mid-major" label has sailed by. And without Butler, the HL's "mid-major" label is gone as well. The HL does not have a single team in the RPI top-100. That's right, NOT ONE TEAM IN THE TOP 100. And, 6 of the 8 are 200 or below. That is a low-major conference. And we are the worst of the bunch. #331. 16 spots from dead last. In all of D-I college basketball. The RPI is a pretty good measuring stick. Facts are facts. (And for those that think kenpom is a better standard, we are at 260. That is nothing to write home about.)

Prediction: Horizon League champion will be playing in Dayton, Ohio, on Tuesday or Wednesday this season.

Just remember this thread. As history has shown us with a inconsistent RJ club, they always come out of nowhere to make it a race. Fact. I know it's hard to accept right now, just mark my words.

Looks like UIC is the closest thing to the next Butler ... and we're the closest thing to the next UIC.

That's up for debate, ghostofdylan. Arguably Jimmy Collins had a lot more success than our current program. Maybe we're the next Loyola -- never reach expectations, but always in the conference mix. Of course, I could be wrong, as our expectation is to just have fun.
