It was a tough loss. But let's be real here. Take away that bogus call on Kelm and we win in regulation. Yes we shoulda made a lot more of our FT's and it was disgusting knowing that everytime we went to the line we were going miss. Yes it was frustrating seeing some of those 3's we took with lots of time left on the clock, but in the first half they were dropping in when we did that. All in all we shoulda won but we got jobbed at the end and we couldn't make FT's. I'd hardly say that calls for anyone giving up on the team or the season.

I think there were a lot of things we could have done better that would have meant a win, and I am not one to ever say that Refs were the cause of a win or loss (you just have to play with what they give you). But i will say when a call is god awful and that one on Kelm was pretty damn bad. We shouldn't have been in the position were that should have been such a game decider, so the loss is still on us, but I really hope the SEC looks at this and realizes their refs made a blunder. I know they are Home Conference refs, but that call was atrocious.

Yeah, it's pretty bad when even the home boy announcers admit it. There was another call or two as well when that they said shouldn't have been made but the one on Kelm was the worst. It was like they were looking for a way to get the c***s the win.

Blaming the refs is an easy out. You cannot expect to get an equal whistle on the road at an SEC school, or pretty much anywhere else for that matter.
Here's the bottom line: We had 2 possessions at the end where if we score, we win the game. On both possessions our offensive set appeared to be "4 guys stand around and wait for Jordan Aaron to do something." We had 3 timeouts, so the opportunity to call a timeout and run an actual play was there; but instead, no timeout was called, no play was run, no effort to calm the players was made and we simply bled the clock and settled for a very weak shot effort. TWICE. [/u]
If this was the first time we have seen this, I would be disappointed, but not too concerned. Unfortunately, this adds to a very long list over the past 7 years of our team failing to execute when it needs to at the end of games against supposed "better" teams.
Ignore it, condone it, diminish it at your leisure - but that is NOT winning basketball.

A couple of things I take away from this game:
1, Jordan Aaron. Thierno Niang. Austin Arians. All three of these players are already having a positive impact on the program. What a phenomenal job of recruiting by Rob, Chad and Duffy!
2, Along with Ray McCallum, Keifer Sykes and Kendrick Perry, J.O. is one of the top four point guards in the conference. That game was reminiscent of Ed McCants vs. Kansas.
3, While playing 87 of a possible 90 combined minutes, J.O. and Bobo wore out at the end of regulation and in overtime. I was hoping for a quicker emergence/recovery by Evan.
4, Both of these teams will finish with more than 10 wins. Michael Carrera was one of the top power forwards we've faced in memory. This was a terrific early-season non-conference game.

Anyone know why JJ only got 1 minute of playing time? I was under the impression that he would be a much bigger part of the team this year. Is the plan to ease him into the rotation and not play him full time for another year or two? It seems to me like he has the most upside, based on all the talk I've heard regarding him.

I'm pretty shocked that Evan 3 minutes & JJ only one. I was wondering as well, why there was no real substitution of any kind for Jordan or Bobo, I know they are the best level of guard play we have but i have a hard time thinking they wee ready to play roughly 40 mins a game right out the gate, getting them a few breathers might have help Jordan actually hit an extra free throw o two down the stretch, if i recall right he had a couple attempts at the end of regulation he was not able to hit that could have helped seal a win. I'm sorry but i still do not understand what Christian Wolf is doing starting, I have not really seen much that tells me he is a better choice to get playing time than JJ at all....Christian seems like a good kid and all but just doesn't seem to me like a starting guy he seems like a guy that comes off the bench when we need more front court depth. But yea the lack of minutes sure does suggest a much different opinion by the staff, at this point....

I would like to agree with you, but did you see anything from Evan or JJ in the Parkside or Mary games that led you to believe they should have played more minutes in a game like this? Both are tremendously talented, but they need to step it up and use that talent effectively to see important minutes. JJ's one minute on the court was horrible. Inexcusable turnover because -- at 6'10 -- he never even surveyed the court to find better options than to throw a panicky pass into the coffin corner. USC was very athletic at guard, but Jordan and Bobo were not just keeping up, but matching or outmatching them. I agree that it would have been preferable to give them some rest, but by the same token if Rob had taken them out of the game the way they were playing, people would have been screaming about that. Imagine how different it would have been if Paris was healthy.
We need JJ and Evan, but they have to prove in practice they are ready to play smart at the speed of the game when they are inserted. They may want to watch Austin Arians.
The staff starts Christian because they trust him, because of the way he practices. He is obviously limited, but he plays within himself for the most part, and it appears that Kyle feels more comfortable coming off the bench.
Losing is always disappointing, but two weeks ago we beat Parkside by one at home. Parkside. Call me crazy but taking an athletic Frank Martin coached team to OT on the road seems like progress to me. We will learn a lot from this game.
It's unfortunately the nature of sports boards that every self-annointed expert wants to second guess every coaching decision. I'm no expert and I admit it. I think the coaches are doing a nice job. They have recruited some tremendous new players and they have completely changed the pace of the offense to accommodate the new talent. (Something, I should point out, that many people here have been screaming for.) It will take a while to put it all together but I like the upside I see in this team. JJ and Evan will get better. Paris will get healthy. Once in a while, big Mete will make a free throw, even if just by accident. Rob's teams have gotten better as the season goes on essentially every year that he has been our coach. I fully expect that to happen again.
In the meantime, if people want to say foolish things because they're upset, I'll value those pronouncements with all the credit they deserve. (Not referring to your post, dutch.)

I hear ya Fran and didn't take a thing as directed toward me specifically and this is not directed as just to you either but more of an in general thing, and i guess the other thing here is there has been a lot of "i have seen this show before" that can not be just pushed aside either.
I guess it is just little stuff that seems odd, and it is much easier to raise these questions after the fact and play arm chair coach i agree but there are trends that are seeming to continue to still run their course with the teams that come out there.
I don't have an answer (sorry but simply saying "fire Jeter" or "we need a new coach" is not a solution that is realistic at this time), but i also hope that we don't run the risk of falling into a familiar path so early in what could be a very important season for this program, on top of that in a game we all saw that we were on the way to winning and we found ways to shoot ourselves in the foot as compared to the Parkside game that we were not in any position to win and found a way to win.
To me the frustrating part is being up 15 at the half and not finding a way to step on the throat and put a team away in the second half, in a game where we were the better team, something that has happened before as well. So yes i agree let's not rush to judgement but at the same time this isn't exactly a new storyline for this program either.....

I'm pretty shocked that Evan 3 minutes & JJ only one. I'll start it a different way. I'm shocked because Evan is in his 3rd year and JJ his 2nd, that I thought those two would've earned more minutes by now.
