Here are some tidbits from the pro-am this weekend.
1) Talk to the current players on the Panthers roster. They look forward to playing at the KC. Could give them a better homecourt edge with 3,000 at the KC, instead of 3,000 at the Cell. Guys are working on the KC, adding rows by the baseline. I asked if you think it will hurt recruiting and they said, no.
2) James Haarsma has lost about 30 lbs.
3) Out of the new guys coming in, who is opening your eyes? All said, Jordan Aaron.

I saw Jordan playing with the guys during the recruiting process while the coaches weren't there. He was just a beast...his game reminds me a lot of Chris Paul - not comparing the two of course, he just resembles the Clip.

2) James Haarsma has lost about 30 lbs. So now he's 6-3 1/2, 200 pounds? Can he play shooting guard?

So now he's 6-3 1/2, 200 pounds? Can he play shooting guard? He said, 218 lbs. Gotta get in shape for this run and gun offense I guess. Haarsma has always had excellent technique as a rebounder. Hopefully his loss of mass won't cause him to get pushed around. I'm not too worried.

He still looked tough as nails at the pro-am.

I'm not too worried. 30 pounds??!! He wasn't that heavy to begin with. I bet he's in better shape...probably added muscle. I like his determination and attitude.

Haarsma looked like he was in the best shape of his life.
Notes:
- I announced the games at the Hawk Dome. So much fun, once I figured out what I was doing and what I could get away with, I had a blast. I plugged PantherU far more than I should have, and called JJ Panoske buckets like a total homer, but oh well.
- Attendance is getting a LOT better. Probably about 300 fans were there for the games tonight, it's definitely building over the first few years. Hopefully it can grow from here. People were having fun, enjoying some basketball. Some people here complain about the quality of play, but when it's close they really grind. It's only in blowouts where the players slack off.
- JJ Panoske did pretty well tonight. Canned a three-pointer in his first attempt, and made roughly half of his shots. JJ matched up against incoming Marquette freshman Steve Taylor, with mixed results. There was a sequence of three straight possessions where JJ nailed a three, Steve Taylor got a jam, Steve blocked a JJ layup, JJ blocked a Taylor dunk (awesome), JJ hit a hook shot, and Taylor faked out JJ to the right and then went left for an easy layup. You can tell their games are similar in progress, but Taylor's body is just ready for the Big East. He's not Gardner big, but the guy's got the size to play BE. JJ doesn't, but he'll be just fine in the Horizon.
- Kyle Kelm is on a family vacation and missed the game. I was disappointed, as I wanted to call him Kyle Klem at least once. Maybe I'll drop a JJ Pan"oo"ske in there at some point. Jerry Ajami was also not there.
- Kam Cerroni had a tough night shooting, but had assists on most Panoske buckets. They really, really work well together. At one point we wondered aloud how they would have done if Panoske stayed committed to GB or if Cerroni took the MKE offer over GB.
- I didn't see Ricky Franklin, Jason Averkamp or Ant Hill play because they were in the other gym and I was announcing the other games. I'll be sure to watch them tomorrow.
I really, really recommend the Pro-Am this year. People really enjoyed themselves and you can tell the whole thing is getting better than it was before.
