Aren't they talking about the proposed new basketball arena?
I don't think there's enough room to put a football field there.
My belief is that as many of the facilities as possible must be built on campus.

A forester friend of mine did a study on the Downer woods and found that while it is nice looking woodland, there is nothing unique in there and a lot of the stuff is non-native and in some cases, invasive. So in terms of aesthetics its a nice thing to have, in terms of preserving quality woodlands, there really is no value. However it serves as a buffer between UWM and Shorewood residents so its going nowhere.
I think that an off-campus athletic village is going to fail. Won't win me any fans on here but that's my feeling on that. It needs to be on or very near campus (like 2-3 blocks away, tops) not down on North Ave. Most students that don't commute live on or near the main campus. That is your target. I think the first goal should be getting an on-campus arena. Whether its renovating the K-center again or attaching a new facility onto it, that should be the preferred option. If not there, somewhere else on or near campus (Columbia Hospital Grounds?)

i've been saying it for years: use eminent domain to acquire the properties of those of our neighbors who complain most loudly about living next to a university, and build facilities there. win-win

If not there, somewhere else on or near campus (Columbia Hospital Grounds?) There are three dorms within 6 blocks or so of each other on North Avenue. Shuttles already service those dorms and on campus. Campus pretty much extends to North Ave. anyways as most of the people that live between North Ave. and Kenwood are students. I think it would be a perfect location for an athletic village. Plus a lot of nightlife/restaurants surround that area as well.

No one in the legislature is going to push for repealing a bill to protect Downer Woods. With the quality of leadership we have seen the last 5 years, your statement is 100% correct. But IF we have new, dynamic leaders in place, and IF they can illustrate the evidence that the university can create jobs and money (and the accompanying votes) with a new arena built on that location, then legislators are far more likely to support this. But that's a huge IF at this point. And it may not be the best location anyway, as others have stated. I'm just saying its not the non-starter that people think it is.

^ I agree, but I also consider North Avenue (and pretty much everywhere between there between there and Kenwood) to be on campus.

UWM must be aggressive and think big with these plans. North Ave could easily be another State St. in Madison or Water St. in Milwaukee. Students will travel 5 to 7 minutes away for a good time, win or lose, football or basketball. Just imagine if politics weren't in the way during the planning and Miller Park was located downtown. If they plan and run it like a insignificant D3 or NAIA school, that's what they will get.

Most alumni older than me consider North Avenue to be separate from campus. Pretty much everyone my age or younger sees North Avenue as our campus' State Street.
If you're worried about attracting the students that far from the "main" campus, consider that every one of those businesses in the North Avenue area is staffed and populated by Panthers.
I'd jump all over Joe Rice's plans in a heartbeat. That's the kind of vision this university needs.

Jimmy''
Hoolie's is the BEST!! My wife and I go there almost every Sunday at around 4:40 for burgers and a few draft beers. The thing is in addition to the ambience which is great they actually serve their draft beer at just the right temperature and clean the beer lines more frequently than virtually any bar in town. You can literally taste the difference. Free Commercial for Hoolie's but LOVE that place!!! Been going there since drinking age was 18 in the 70's./ Steve

Hooligan's is by far the best bar on North Ave. right now. I've never had a bad drink/meal in my 5+ years of patronage.
Jimmy if I could win the lottery, my 1st move would be to pay off my student loans, and #2 would be to buy the WPC Site in the hopes of making my thesis come true.
Unfortunately the mega millions didn't fall my way. this time....
