Gary D'Amato is a fantastic writer, one of the best I've read in my many years reading and covering sports.
He's certainly more of a golf and football guy, but I've never seen him "half-ass" anything.
Decisions about coverage are made at the editorial level, and frankly I'm eating some crow for saying that things would be better without Garry Howard.
