Butler Fan here. First off, congratulations on the win last night as well as the season so far. The game we had with you on New Years Eve was a great watch, and I look forward to our next meeting up here.
I wasn't sure where to post this, so here goes: I will be in Milwaukee for the weekend, and was looking for some recomendations as far as the bar scene goes. I tried Googling, but figured I might as well come right to the source. Recent college grad, if that helps.
Thanks in advance!

Depends on where in Milwaukee you will be.
Water St. is always a good bar scene if you like to bar hop.
North Ave is awesome if you like to sit and relax at one of the many nice bars.
Milwaukee St. is going to be your higher end places with good drinks and still affordable.
IMO

Thanks for the recommendations! I think I'll give Water Street a shot.
Good luck the rest of the year!

If you go down to Water Street I'd try McGillicuddy's. But stay away from their Extra Dry Vodka Martinis.

Water St is horrible. It's crowded, loud, CRAWLING with cops, ridiculously expensive, there's absolutely nowhere to park, and the clientele gets dangerously close to Jersey Shore territory. The surrounding downtown area is much nicer, like the Old German Beer Hall on Third across the river. (Navigational tip: all numbered streets in the city are north-south). The third ward, which isn't all that far away, is much more pleasant while retaining the parking problems and price, and North is way cheaper without changing the clientele all that much. But to me either is preferable to Water. Although on North you can go to Landmark Lanes or the Oriental Theatre, both of which are ancient. The Oriental is gorgeous.

McGillicuddy's shut down.
Go to North Avenue, you'll get a lot better experience and you're into the UWM college crowd. I've always been partial to Bay View, especially the Kinickinic area around Lincoln with the Sugar Maple, Cafe Centraal, Highbury etc. It's a little further from downtown than UWM but in the opposite (south) direction.

Thanks for all of the input! I think I've changed my destination and will be heading to North Avenue. Thanks again!

I'm pretty sure that it reopened.
Either way, North Ave is a good choice. Bars aren't only on North though, they're pretty dense off the side streets - Kenilworth, Farwell, and Murray. Venture about half a mile South to Brady St for a good time as well. If you want a real party bar, go to JoCats later in the night. It's pretty wild. The Garage, the Nomad, and Crisp are all next door (among many others). If there's one thing that's easy to find in Milwaukee, it's a bar.

PantherFan, I'll take your advice and venture out a little! Not being familiar with the city, is that an area where I'll feel safe wandering around at night?

PantherFan, I'll take your advice and venture out a little! Not being familiar with the city, is that an area where I'll feel safe wandering around at night? As safe as it gets in any major city IMO. From North Ave to Brady St. you really can't go wrong. Crisp on Brady may or may not be safe.

North Ave/Brady Street are the closest thing you'll get to Broadripple.

As others have attested, it's a very safe area. Lots of people out until the wee hours. This area is just a bit South of UWM's main campus and near the lake. Imagine Broadripple with more density.
I've lived in this area for many years and really enjoy it. Happy to answer other questions if you have them.

For my 1/50th of a dollar, these are the best two posts in the thread. No offense to anyone who likes Water Street, but I've found all of its establishments to be geared towards tourists, transplants and suburbanites who are afraid of dealing with brown people. Actually, the same can be said for just about anywhere downtown (one of the many reasons I consider the East Side to be Milwaukee's "true" downtown). Brady Street and North Ave are the places to go near campus. If you don't mind venturing out a bit, the aforementioned Bay View or the Third Ward will serve you well (though the latter can get a bit pricey). I'd also suggest Riverwest and Walker's Point... I know some people are think these places are dangerous, but someone with even the slightest bit of urban living experience should be able to handle them just fine.
