The 43 points scored last night by Illinois's Brandon Paul are the 3rd most in Illini' history and was the first 40 point game since Andy Kaufmann had 46 on 12/3/1990. Who did those 46 points come against? None other than the Panthers who lost 120-116 in double overtime.
Oh and Kaufmann wasn't even the leading scorer in the game. Von McDade had 50.
Just thought I would post this crazy connection. I've actually come across a minute and a half of film from the first overtime and Milwaukee was leading 96-95...would be nice to find the entire game though.

"We had one dude with a 40-inch vertical."
Ladies and gentlemen, meet Craig Greene.
I think we've had four guys in our Division 1 history with a 40-inch vertical -- Ryan Allen is one of them.

The ""40 inch vertical" is a lot like the 4.2 forty. Often touted, rarely (as in, practically speaking, never) accomplished. It's a number that has no objective meaning, not least because there are different ways to measure what it allegedly signifies and none of those ways of measurement happens in the context of actually playing in a regulation game.
Sports numbers that are disconnected from reality and collect secondary meaning bother me. (You can include the common "he's a seven footer" refrain. Unless you're referring to Alec Brown, no, he's not.)
Ryan Allen can really jump. So could Craig Greene. That's enough for me.

There have been four Panthers with a "40-inch vertical."
Craig Greene, Boo Davis, Torre Johnson and Ryan Allen.
We're not lacking "explosive athleticism." We're lacking consistent offense.

Marc Mitchell's had to have been up there - 6'0" and could dunk with ease.

I'm guessing Evan Richard has to be up there too?

I'm guessing Evan Richard has to be up there too? Considering Evan can jump higher than Ryan, I'd say yes. Of course, Ryan can do things in traffic that Evan can't do quite yet.
