If you want to be the best, you have to beat the best. It would be fun to beat the best three times. Also, a final with Butler will guarantee a big audience on ESPN. A chance for Milwaukee to show itself off. Also, the HL's best shot at getting two bids is to have Butler lose in the final, whether it's to Milwaukee or some other team. A pretty good ESPN crew of Bob Wischusen and Steven Bardo is doing the HL Final.

You mean, no Dickey Simpkins this year? Darn it!
Wischusen and Bardo aren't bad , but why can't Jim Barbar and David Kaplan (or Kap and Jim Chones) be assigned to broadcast the championship of the league they regularly cover?
I guess there's just too much logic in that.

They are not an ESPN type team.

They are not an ESPN type team. See, I don't follow this. What is the problem with that team? They know more about the Horizon League than anyone, and demonstrate that knowledge. It's kinda like Bob Uecker covering the Milwaukee Brewers all the way until the world series, and being replaced by Mike Tirico because Uecker isn't "national radio" worthy.

I do have to agree, I thought Chones came across sincerely in enjoying HL bball.

Off-topic, but Ueck did national TV with Bob Costas in the 90's including a few World Series.

Back before regional sports networks and ESPN televising baseball just about every other night, Uecker used to be a main voice on ABC's Monday Night Baseball and was doing national broadcasts dating back into the late 1970s.

They're an ESPNU team, and ESPNU is not considered a first-tier sports channel by the public at large. I'd rather have a more recognizable voice doing a Panther game when it comes to the Horizon League tournament. It's a sign of greater media respect, for the conference in general.

Would you guys rather have a recognizable voice doing the game or someone who's intelligent about the league?
Personally, I have no tolerance for talking heads like Digger Phelps and Hubert Davis who only want to discuss the BCS conferences anyway.
Please be braced for the first time Bardo says "Val-pa-RYE-so" or says that Butler has dominated the league for the last 10 years.

From the marketing perspective, having more famous voices helps. Especially if they actually display knowledge about basketball, which almost all of the color commentators do (with the huge exception of Dick Vitale). Since we're so concerned with branding at this university, we have to take these things into consideration.

Bardo is fairly well-known.
Of course, I wish they'd put the #3 or #4 ESPN team on the HL championship game. One would think the potential for Butler to be there would be enough.
