Does anyone know if Walker's budget cuts will have an impact on athletics in the UW system? Education is expecting enormous cuts and I cannot imagine that wont impact the UW system's biggest cash cow -- athletics. Do any of the D3 schools come close to operating their departments in the black? Even with the success of our men's and women's sports, none of them are close to breaking even and really contribute nothing to the school's revenue. Its no secret that the department is in debt.
I did not see anything directly in the Budget Repair Bill, but that doesn't mean the large cuts wont impact the departments in other ways.

My guess would be none of the D2 or D3 schools in the state come close to operating in the Black. Maybe UWW because their football team has been so successful and they get alot of playoff home games. It will be interesting to see how athletics are treated. I still say use some marketing budget for athletics because having a team successful enough to get the schools name out there is big for marketing the school.

Athletics are a different beast because of donors, right?

Athletics are a different beast because of donors, right? You're absolutely right. There's a reason our athletic department hasn't buckled under the weight of it's $8 million debt, and that's because of donations. Not donations to athletics, per say, but donations to the academic side of the university that would otherwise be unavailable if we shut down our athletics program or dropped it to a lower level. I personally can attest that I know of three 5-figure annual donors to academics that would seriously consider lowering their donations, should anything happen to our athletics program. Think of athletics as marketing; our university's brand is pushed through our athletics program, and the goal of marketing is achieved in athletics.

Making the sweet 16 did more for marketing our university and putting it on the map than all of our marketing efforts.
