In the wake of this (latest) travesty, I suggest you give a read to yesterday's wonderful Bob McGinn article on Mike McCarthy's newfound swagger and the effective "brainwashing" of the members of his team.
In essence, he has his team believing that it can beat anyone on any given night to the point where several players are likely performing at a level transcending their ability level.
As such, a team that's been remarkably consistent despite losses in personnel that would have floored most teams is peaking at the perfect time as it plows over its opponents.
He even has this chronically skeptical fan believing that nothing can stop the Packers in their quest for a trip to Dallas.
McCarthy has everyone remotely associated with the team convinced that only positive things are possible.
This, my friends, is what coaching is all about.

Rex Ryan agrees with that as well I would think.
The 2005 Panthers also had that mentality. The locker room clip of Pearl rallying the troops before taking the floor against Alabama is what that's all about.

How do we lose to a team that only has 1 league win and lose on our home court? Oh yeah there were bad passes, forced shots, bad shot selection and defensive lapses galore. It was nice to see some real hustle in the last two minutes of the game but by then it was too late. Added to that were some questionable coaching decisions, like pulling Ant twice in the first half when he was dominating the court. Not to mention not calling a time out until our 13 point lead melted down to 4. I heard one fan say he won't be renewing his season tickets. Some people behind us were at their first game. Towards the end, they were saying next time they'll spend their money on a Marquette game or stay home and watch the Badgers. As we walked out, one fan who I've seen at a lot of games suggested that the students should have yelled "Fire Jeter" at the end of the game. All seven of them. Then there were the player interviews. Wasn't it nice to know that Haggarty's dream is to take the degree we are paying for and move to downtown Chicago? Or what about other one they showed, I think it was Allen, "I'm a Chicago sports fan, Bears, Cubs ...." comment. People were rolling their eyes. Comments like those aren't going to endear them to this fan base. Doesn't anyone edit these things? Just more proof (as if we needed any watching the team on the court) that this program has a ways to go. I've got to admit that your comment about the student section made me laugh out loud!!

I think we've reached the point with this team where the fans don't know what to say, the coaches don't know what to day and the players don't know what to say. We've got a bunch of games left, lots on the road. The coaches and players seem to accept where they are at with things. It's a simple story to predict. We win some, we lose more than some, the season ends. That's about it. The most interesting thing to come out of the next few months may be whatever we hear from Costello when he arrives. It doesn't appear to be anything that we'd see out on the court.

i have been stewing on this for a couple days now, i think i am thankful that I had plans to go out for the Packer game so i didn't have to spend my entire day sitting and fuming on the crap sandwich of a game i saw early on saturday.from the PATHETIC attempt of a student crowd, to which i say we in no way ever deserve to make fun of another school student turnout again, since we are just as bad as those schools that people rip on if not worse!
And then the game, first was ok, too many 3's IMO but overall was ok with the lead. Then the second half started, and we went in the toilet.......no one beside Ant could hit a shot inside the arch to save their life and the 3's at times didn't seem to be falling but we kept with them. I knwo we were 10-28 for the game a wonderful percentage and one that i would honestly say we should win with more often than not but that is just the deal with this years team. Have portions of stat lines that would be great and you would think would get us a win but not so much.
There are just things that I don't understand about this team, like how does Ant just make people look stupid on offense at times but end the game only getting 3 rebs? I hate harping a kid but dude play with some sack and f-ing rebounds! Tony and Tone, the 3's aren't falling, no worries just keep throwing em up, because not like driving to the hoop and try to get to the line to restore a bit of confidence or anything......Now let me first say that this year Tony has been the best player on the floor for us more often than not and have been super impressed with him but he didn't look like he came to play saturday, and the senior leadership has been in a word NONEXISTENT this year......
That is what is frustrating to me, some games you have guys who look lost out there and play with no emotion, I know the team looks as if they don't give up and keep trying every game but where is the fire, where is the guy on the floor that gets the guys to remove their heads from their arses??? I'm sorry but i don't see it out there and that is a big reason why i think we are so up and down, no one looks like they want to step it up and take the team by the jock strap and kick them in the ass and say hey get your head on and play right!!!!
i guess it's just frustration this year, and the inability to find a reason as to why this season has went the way it has, all the pieces seem to be there, but it just isn't coming thru and it makes no sense as to why.....

God damn it, it's WINTER BREAK. So what? So there are only 7 students in the greater Milwaukee metro area during the break for UWM? thanks i was unaware that so many students from UWM live so far away during any time period not during the school semester. When are people going to stop using Winter break as an excuse, when are they going to stop using the fact that they don't play on campus as an excuse, when are they going to stop using the well the time of the game isn't easy for students to attend? Is crap and thats all there is to it, so don't stand there and say its winter break and assume that is a reasonable notion for why we have had single digit student section crowds the last two home games and maybe a max of about 30 students since winter break started, that is a lame and terrible excuse and is complete crap. Sorry you don't want to hear others call out students and the student section crowd but to me when u get in free get free transport and still don't show you deserve to get called out and will continue to get called out until you prove otherwise! And at that you better not call out other schools for low student section turnouts as well since if you can't do the walking you better not do the talking! It is the truth sorry man but you gotta accept that, like it or not, it it the truth.

The Winter Break excuse is weak. How many students live within 30 miles of downtown? 20,000?

I actually joined the student section because of how weak it is.

There's always an excuse. "The students don't know" "It's downtown" "It's Winter Break", etc. All have a degree of merit to them, so it's easy to look away from the problem. But with a respectable team that beat Butler and played blow for blow with Marquette; and with a student enrollment at around 30,000, that student section should be half full or pretty close to it every game, let alone against a conference rival. Especially a MIL-CHI battle. It is easily the most frustrating thing about this program for me, even more than the bipolar performances.
Mr. Costello has a project on his hands. Best of luck to him.

UWM is a perfect opportunity for an up and coming AD. You're right.....lots of hard work, luck, and a bit of time could make UWM a model athletic program.

Its tough for me to blame students for not attending when we invest little in promoting the team around campus. There is limited pride shown for the team by the university and its faculty IMO. Its easy to get bandwagon fans when your a big deal, but when you've been hovering around .500 for the past few years, more effort has to be exhibited to get desired results...its common sense.
If we were a true .500 team, a team with mediocre talent that FOUGHT every minute of every game to compete and get wins, and whose losses came against teams that are clearly more talented, then I could see more fans being attracted.
We had a decent student section for Cleveland St., but I doubt we impressed too many there. Marquette had a good student turnout, and although it was the most frustrating game of the season for me (1st half defensive effort was laughable, and we lost to a team we matched up really well against to beat) It was an entertaining game for most, but you can't hold on to that momentum all season when you lose to wright St. by a 100 Depaul by 14 and then Loyola at home.
IMO every team in the Horizon has made tremendous strides forward since we last made the NCAA tournament except for 2, us and UIC. UIC did something about the downward spiral they were in, and I hope we will start "fixing" our issues sooner rather than later. A sincere thank you to the other 8 teams in our conference who have stepped up there game, and turned us into one of the premier non BCS conferences in the country.
