So as many of you know I am a sophmore here at UWM. I commute to school every day for class from Muskego. Well on the bus ride home I overheard 2 students in the seat behind me talking. One was wearing a Duke shirt and the kid next to him asked him if it was his favorite team. He said yes and they then went on talking about who they like in college B-ball. One of them is a freaking season ticket holder for MARQUETTE Needless to say after a while of them discussing teams they enjoy watching not once was there a mention of UWM, their OWN FREAKIN SCHOOL! Am I wrong to be upset by this and wanting to literally turn around and rip them a new A$$HOLE. I just don't understand how someone can not even care one bit for there own school team. If you want to root for another team along with UWM thats fine but to not even care just annoys me. Anyway I have loved this team since I was a little kid and started following College B-ball. The NCAA and Sweet 16 run are some of my favorite moments ever. I am a State team homer so I basically root for all for in-state teams. My fanhhod priority falls Milwaukee 1st, followed by Marquette, Wisconsin, and lastly Green Bay. Maybe I am overreacting to this whole thing but for some reason it bothered me to no end. Anyway I'm done venting now.

You're not wrong to be upset about it, but it doesn't surprise me either. Unfortunately, it's very difficult to build school pride at a commuter school.

This commuter school argument has to end...UWM has more residential students than Marquette has students period.

Yeah but more than likely the students who were talking were commuters. I get it that we aren't a commuter school anymore but that doesn't mean those who commute might be less likely to have a strong of a connection to Milwaukee.

As I said before I commute every day and growing up I had little connection to Milwaukee but that Panthers have always been my team for some reason. Even though I commute I still make the trip to as many Panthers games as I can and if I can't make it I will be watching or listening somewhere Maybe commuting is used as an excuse by some but you won't hear it from me as I will always be a Panther

When the Panthers rise again...and they will my compadres....just remember all of this. It'll be pretty easy to distinguish the loyal die-hards from the cho-cho wagon riders. P!R!I!D!E!

It sucks but can you blame them? Marquette = Big East, NCAA Tournament most years, Top notch competition, excellent facility, fans that care. Really if someone wants to see big time college basketball they are going to gravitate to Marquette. Some people just go to school to learn and don't care about their school's sports teams, especially when they are at the level of UWM's.
I'll even out myself, one year I had Marquette season tickets too (though I have been a UWM season ticket holder for the last 7 or 8 years I think).

Why is it a bad thing to be a commuter school?

Its not a bad thing to be a commuter school, we just simply aren't one. I live on the eastside and have for some time now, and I can tell you that they're are far less families in the area and more students than was the case 4-5 years ago.
In the past five years I've seen the Kenilworth building go up, the buildings on the corner of North and Holton, and a week ago I heard that there is another dorm type building going up that I've never heard of.
We need to have some form of winning going on, or at least recent winning, in order to attract most of our students as fans. Everyone knows plenty of people that are Marquette fans, and to a lesser extent Wisconsin fans, that exist on the eastside. No one likes to be a fan of the team that gets whipped night in and out, and than you have to hear it from other Knuckleheads.
An on campus arena wouldn't hurt either, seeing as we aren't a commuter school
