Let's just get this dead period over with, whether George is AD or not.
Here's what I do if I'm George, on my first day back:
1. Call a meeting with everyone in the athletic department. There is an obvious rift, and it needs to be put to rest. Whatever the problem is that put him on leave in the first place, own up to it - that is, if it's true. Be honest with your employees, apologize if an apology is needed, and promise your undying support for them.
2. Make nice with the top people in the department. Litzau, Jeter, Botham - bury the hatchet (if it exists) and try to start anew. Build the relationships from scratch.
3. Be open and welcoming for your largest donors. Repeat the process that you took with your employees.
4. Personally, I think a public statement is needed. People aren't just going to support the athletic department after this situation unless they know what's going on. If they don't think it needs to happen, then there needs to be some way to show the public that we are united - dropping "UWM" "UW-Milwaukee" and "Wisconsin-Milwaukee" is an option, since we're trying to show "One name, One team, One goal."
5. That's how we move forward. With the arena, with the debt, with school spirit, with marketing, with recruiting, with Milwaukee Athletics. As one. We're all on the same side, so let's bury all the bad blood and get to work.

I think many donors' checkbooks will be put away instantly if there's no change at the top.

Wow Fran... sounds like Koonce has alienated a lot of people both internally and externally....maybe a clean break is best for all ... arrive at at settlement not to retain him but to get him out and move on....the guy I would have hired to begin with Vince Sweeney... is he available??

If we drew from the same field of candidates we previously interviewed, then Monty Porter would likely be the guy. That being said, who knows who would have interest in the position at this point. There might even be someone who is a head AD that has taken their current program to new heights and wants a new challenge. who knows

No, Paul Schlickmann would have been the guy if it wasn't George. However, Schlickmann recently took the AD job at Central Connecticut State.

What options do the personnel rules permit?
Wouldn't the University be required to start a new search from scratch?
Inquiring minds like mine want to know...

I would think so ... state jobs have to be publicly posted for a certain length of time.

Regarding Begel's article. I was under the impression that tax dollars don't go to the AD. That it's support is from private donations, student fees and ticket sales.

I was always impressed with Jason Clark when he was under Bud. The guy is smart, knows how to communicate, and I think, would make a great AD.

Jason's very content right now as the GM of the Milwaukee Iron. He did a fantastic job pulling together that roster, but he's a football guy.
What I've always said about Jason, is if you can go crazy for Indiana Hoosiers Football, you have to reeeeeeally love football. And he does.
We don't have it, and he runs the show for a pro football franchise. I think he's happy where he is, and I don't blame him; he's taking the Iron places.
