Local media attention that exceeds a given high school will help. BINGO!!!!!!!!!!!!! That would be key #1! Hell at Goolsby's last nite there was a group going to the Bucks game right next to my table before going in that had no idea that UWM even played at the Cell for the last few years. They were not students they were 2 dads and their kids and were just like oh wow i never heard that anyone actually played there for basketball anymore.......to me that does have alot to do with the local media not mentioning us or our games ever

As a student I came to THIS university to get excited about Panthers, not the badgers and certainly not the eagles, but why is it that students here show way more pride for these other schools. It seems to me that this school struggles with student outreach and advertising. Last night, I was surprised to see that many students at the game considering there was hardly any advertising around campus, and there was zero advertising in the dorms, none. If you want to win over the students, you got to start with the new class of freshmen. As all the students who were around for those glory years have graduated, we are the next generation of panther fans. There is thousands of new students on campus this year, most of them want to be excited for the Panthers but don't know when or where the games are. Hell I didn't even know tickets were free for students until a few weeks ago, I might have gone to the soccer games if I knew that. I don't think a lot freshmen know that games are free, I think more students would go to the games if they knew that. I think if the athletic department would send the tickets to the students who registered for the panther pack, than more students would remember to go to the games. Look at how many people came to Pantherfest, those tickets were free and everyone knew it. We had so many students at Pantherfest they had to kick people out. Game days should be treated like pantherfest. There was no confusion, everyone knew about the event, how to get there, and that it is free. How come when I ask the students who live on my floor if they are going to the game they say "what game?" "How much are tickets?" "How do we get there?". These are simple questions that can easily be answer with some more advertising. I don't want be a downer, I had a lot of fun at the cell last night, but I would like to see more school pride. Go Panthers!!!! ;D

The onus doesn't entirely fall on the university and the athletic department. There needs to be a student-organized program in the dorms every. single. year. Old members of the student section can teach kids the ropes, basketball players can show up to help. Maybe even coaches -- god knows Sandy would love to be involved in something like this -- and the athletic director. Make Flicks into a giant pep rally to kick off the season. Invite Joah Tucker. Show off our trophies.
Honestly, if we as students and fans feel let down by the way the university is handling advertising, we should take it upon ourselves to try to make up the gap. And we should keep in contact with the athletic department, something the Student Black & Gold Club -- a student organization -- could have a huge hand in.

Wauker, Very refreshing to see more of us coming to Milwaukee . The concerns you have aren't new though, a lot of people have been critical of the marketing of the panthers for a while. At least in the last couple of years the badger and marquette banners on houses around campus have been replaced by the occasional panther banner. It will take some time, and the hiring of a sales/marketing mind with intimate knowledge of our ploy. Hopefully a new athletic director will mean forward momentum and positive change.

Super King,
Ok how about you and the other older members of the students section come to Sandburg and do some recruiting for this student organization. I know my friends would join. You could do some tabling at the cafe during lunch. I will help you. Lets gets this going, the season has already started.

I could talk to Travis Wacker about that, as I'm not affiliated with the Black & Gold Club. I'd love to help out, though I have other engagements with the Union Activities Board that we'd have to work around. A comprehensive strategy for targeting student attendance for next semester on our part might be a good idea; we could even start a thread about it in the Klotsche Krazies board.

Doesn't help either that the University Housing is off in it's own little world.

Only now are they finally getting the message at the ticket office. They set up a both for the remaining student vouchers at the Union with Pounce carrying a poster around. 500+ have been handed out for both games...been trying my part in getting people to go.

Wouldn't it be neat to see a huge student section at the Western Michigan game? Even 500 students at the KC would overpower the joint.
And of course seeing a full 2,500 at the MU game would be simply amazing. Imagine 1/4 of the arena as a student section? That would be something to behold.
