This team continues to confound everyone, falling tonight 71-65 to a Buffalo team that lost at home earlier this season to Vermont (58-57) and Canisius (73-71). The Bulls also lost at No. 4 Purdue 101-65.

Living here in GB- can't wait to watch the news tonight to see where the blame lies in this loss. This morning on the sports talk radio he kept blaming things on the team being young. He should take a lesson from our women's team which is nationally ranked and has never ever blamed "youth" on things going wrong despite being one of the youngest team in the Horizon.
Food for thought...
Cheers.... Southpaw

Ah yes- the post game comments on TV were that the physicality of the game is what lead to GB losing- courtesey of my favorite coach. The more things change- the more they stay the same....

If Fletcher's not there, they're going to struggle. He's a 17ppg guy. The last game he missed, I think, was at Oakland, a 75-50 loss, or thereabouts, right after the Madison win.
With the three guards Perrine, Cotton and Fletcher, they can be very good, a top 100 team, on any given night. Without him, they drop like a stone, I think.

I saw the GB/Detroit game.
Detroit had a incredible size and strength advantage and just didn't use it. Fletcher and Perine were way too quick for them.
Hard league to figure out. GB gets crushed at the Cell but then handles Detroit, and beats Wright State, too. some of it is just home court, but it's also wierd the way teams are matching upthis year.

Very surprised by this result, given what had transpired in the past week.
Detroit lost despite shooting 27 of 47 (57.4) from the field because it made just one of eight 3-point attempts (why so few?) and missed its last five free throws -- making just 17 of 26 from the line overall. GB, meanwhile, won despite some pedestrian numbers from the field by making 17 of its 21 free-throw attempts and by being more secure with the ball (13 turnovers to 18).

A familiar sounding article, no? This could have been written for almost any midmajor that's not currently named Gonzaga - bandwagon community support, disinterested alums, little student support/spirit... At least we're not alone.

The numbers that should be written about more are Butler's. I remember when Indy was trying to promote itself as the amateur sports capitol of the US. Indy had the facilities downtown and a vibrant downtown. Indy wanted to host all sorts of amateur events. But it's all talk. They won't even support a top twenty team in their own backyard. Yes they get the occasional sellout when on ESPN, but other than that, what are the attendance figures?

I 've always been saying that about Green Bay, there is no other basketball in GB. They should be drawing way better than they do. Last season they had the team that should of been in the title game. GB has great tickets deals as well.

This could have been written for almost any midmajor that's not currently named Gonzaga - bandwagon community support, disinterested alums, little student support/spirit... At least we're not alone. I wouldn't call it almost any mid-major. I think it's more accurate to say most. There are many programs in the MVC, A-10 and other conferences that have no problem putting butts in the seats I'll give you an example. Bradley is the only show in town, and we knew it when we went in there for the Bracket Buster two years ago. It was absolutely amazing. We honestly felt as though we were in a Big 10 arena and town that day. The streets were flooded with Braves fans up to game time, and the arena was sold out for a game with Milwaukee, the 4th place team in the Horizon at that point, I believe. I came out of there feeling naive; I had always believed that everything was roses in the Power conferences and Gonzaga and everyone else struggled to get fans excited. The Bradley trip was a reality check; just because we're a mid-major doesn't mean we should accept any number. We need to press our alumni, our students, and casual fans to get involved and get excited. Does that mean we're sh*t out of luck, because we're the third basketball option in Milwaukee and the Packers and Badgers are short drives elsewhere in the state? Absolutely not. We need to take advantage of what we are that Marquette and the Bucks are not. We are Milwaukee's University. Our alumni run this town; not to say that MU or UW alumni are not important, just saying that this town would look a lot different if UWM grads picked up and left. We have 100,000 alumni within shouting distance of the university. We have 31,500 students (yes, that's the new count) which makes us one of the 50 largest campuses in the country. We have to appeal to the city and our people. Their name is emblazoned across our chests, not Marquette. The school educates the city of Milwaukee and the people in it, and the basketball team is a big part of that. You'll notice that PantherU has a new slogan: "Your town. Your school. Your team." Why did I go with that? Because if we want the people of Milwaukee to embrace this team, we need to put the onus on them to take ownership of it. We need the alumni, who have long ignored their alma mater save for the spring of 2005, to take ownership of their second home. Like I said, put the ball in their court. You're gonna ignore YOUR team? This is Milwaukee Basketball, the school that represents your city in the NCAA. Thousands of coasties have no idea where Marquette is, but they'd be pretty moronic if they didn't know where the Milwaukee Panthers played. So take ownership. We need to make it so Panther Basketball is just as much a part of Milwaukee as Summerfest, Brewers Tailgating and Friday Fish Fry. If I knew exactly how to do it, I'd have already pushed for it. But I'm no marketing whiz; I don't know what to do.
