Anyone have an idea why UWM didn't go after Dave Bliss out of Wausau West? OK, if he got a scholarship offer from Georgia, he probably wasn't going to play at UWM anyway. But man, if a 6-foot 10-inch guy averaging 19 points and 14.5 rebounds was choosing between Georgia, Central Michigan, William & Mary and a walk-on invitation from Wisconsin, it would've been nice to at least see us get in the mix -- especially with the Panthers' need for a big body. Maybe he's not athletic enough or something. I've never seen him play. www.jsonline.com/sports/prep/apr04/225123.asp

I have never seen Dave play, and I wish him the best, but at times, some of the larger schools (i.e. Georgia) can afford to take a chance on a big player (6'10") simply because they have a "scholarship to burn" They may be willing to take a flyer on someone like Bliss due to the current make up of the team. If he materializes, great..........if not, no big deal to them..........at worst, they have a decent 6'10" practice player. UWM, and many other "mid-majors" don't have this luxury - we can't afford to take many chances like this. Again, I have never seen Dave play, and I don't mean to disrespect him in any way - but seeing as he only had one "major" recruiting him, IMO they see him as a long shot - someone that big doesn't fall through the cracks and many, many coaches have seen him play (most of which feel he isn't what they are looking for right now, or can't afford to take on the project of making him into a legitimate big man). But, with that being said, you can't teach height.............it will be interesting to see what happens with him.

I would have to disagree. I think its schools LIKE UWM who need to take chances on guys. The pressure to win at a school like UGA is a lot greater than here. In the SEC you better get players who can play. At UWM you LOOK for guys who are a bit risky or who have fallen through the cracks. That being said, Ive never seen the kid play. I know nothing about him. I hear what you are saying, but UWM has taken "chances" on quite a few players in the past (pre Pearl era) and not a one really materialized. All I am saying is that "flyers" on the mid-major level are a very risky business......one that rarely works out. I am not saying that it never happens, or that the possibility shouldn't be pursued, just that most of the time all it turns out to be is a wasted scholarship (which is arguably more valueable to a mid-major, especially one like UWM who goes 8 - 10 deep, opposed to a team like UGA for instance who probably goes 7 or 8 deep at most). If you don't believe me, ask pnthr97, kaygee, uwmfan, or asudevil.......they can tell you about how the "flyers" from New York, Texas, Belgium, etc. worked out. And some of those guys were supposed to be legit......then again, that may have just been a case of BAD recruiting but who am I to say
