Tuesday at 8:00 P.M. on ESPN2
What to do when you can't stand both teams? Forget the HL for one night, drill 'em Duke.

I have to respectfully disagree, Von. This league needs to regain a sliver of national respect (sans UWM, no one in the league has registered a win of note and suddenly the Air Force win doesn't appear quite so prominent). So, as much as it pains me to say it, go Flames! I will be the first to congratulate you guys if you pull this one off. Good job on the aggressive schedule.

Well, they played a heck of a first half..........they just got caught in a buzzsaw in the second half (hope this doesn't happen to us at KU - and it easily can if we don't play a complete 40 minutes). Overall, I think they did alright. The score wasn't pretty, but if you watched the game, it wasn't all that bad IMO.
I found it annoying that the announcers (mainly Len) kept repeating that "they are picked to win the HL, they are going to win the HL, they usually win the HL, Ced is the POTY, etc." I am not taking anything away from UIC as they definitely have been in the hunt at the top of the league for the past few seasons, but they made it sound like UIC was "The Show" in the HL, which just isn't true........More than a few publications had UIC picked second in the league, as well as having Ed picked as POTY. I don't expect anyone to give UWM any fluff, especially in a nationally televised game (in which UWM isn't even playing), but some of their statements were a bit misleading - half-truths at times.

Hey Pnthr 30, was the reffing really as bad as the UIC message board is making it out to be . I was not able to view the game but the way they see it, they should have lost by 20 points, not 33 . 18 blocked shots in a game is unreal; however, they insisted they wanted to get Poole established inside. The only problem with that is that Williams is one of the best shot blockers in the country. But hey, what do I know, since UWM is an overrated team that lost on the road to Valpo!!

There were some questionable calls, but come on, you are playing on the road (at Duke nonetheless), against an ACC team (and a top 10 team at that)....you are NOT gonna get any calls, expect that. In the first half, UIC appeared to be the aggressor - and got some calls in their favor. In the second half they seemed to back off a bit and not be as aggressive/strong. Many of the blocks were on shots that just appeared to be thrown in the direction of the basket. I cannot say for sure, but McGee had to have at least 5 or 6 shots blocked......and a few others where he just "threw" it up. In the second half, UIC took about 6 shots that were just horrible........no other way to put it - no real chance of going in.......were they fouled....maybe, but if you are falling away or not looking at the basket, you are not gonna get a call - especially at Duke. Overall, I didn't think the refs had anything to do with the outcome of the game (20 point loss, 30 point loss does it really matter). Bottom line is that UIC played real well in the first half (shot great) and Duke didn't look good (could be because of UIC, could be because they were "off", etc.) but in the second half Duke started out with a 16-0 run.........and they they kept it going. Digging yourself into a whole like that is not a good place to be. There is not team in the HL (UWM included) that I can see turing a situation like that around. Ced Banks with 7 turnovers and 0 assists did not help the situation out. When Sheldon decided to play (2nd half), UIC just had no answer......Programs like Duke, Kansas, etc. are on a whole nother level - all 5 of their starting players are as good as, if not better than, Banks and McCants (pre-season POTY candidates) - flat out to much fire power. Can a HL team steal one, sure, but all the stars must be alligned right.
IMHO the Kansas game coming up is the best team that UWM has ever played........hope we all come to play and give them a run for as long as possible.

P30, Would this Kansas team compete with the Cincinatti team we played in '99 with Kenyon Martin and all those high flyers? They were ranked #3 at the time. Just wondering your opinion. I don't know, I really haven't watched KU play this year yet.

I don't know, I really haven't watched KU play this year yet. Great point.....to be honest, somehow that game slipped my mind I think that this years Kansas team is pretty comparable to that Cincy team in terms of athleticism (it is no secret that Cincy is historically very athletic).......but it is difficult to really compare how good the two teams are being a five years removed from each other. However, I don't think it is a stretch to say that this years UWM team is MUCH more athletic than the UWM team in 99........hopefully that will translate into a little better result.
