My good friend from UWM is attending Ball State for graduate studies and took in the WSU v. BSU game last night. I asked him to do a quick scout of WSU. Being a former manager under Bo Ryan and analytical freak he tends to not enjoy the game but pick it apart.
"UWM will crush Wright State, early prediction is UWM 78- WSU 57
Keys to the game
1. Win the turnover battle - Wright State will turn over the ball with pressure and not be able to score. The first half started with them having 5 points in 10 minutes, use the outside hand and play aggressive off their screens to create steals, they didn't backdoor one time all game
2. Draw and Kick, you'll score every time - use the shot fake they will bite hard - they are sloppy, please drive the ball!!!!!
3. Get the ball down low, this is a must - 22 is the only guy who can sort of defend down low. This team is small, little quick, but small, we can just out power them
4. Pray they use their crappy half court trap and 1-3-1 defense - Threes and Dunks will rain down from heaven with good ball movement
5. Contain number 1, Woods - He's really fast, great ball handler, scores off the dribble but will shoot, even the 3, if he has to. This guy flat out creates offense for the himself and rest of the team. Stop him and stop WSU
6. Contain 33 - this guy can shoot and shoot deep. He doesn't create anything for himself but can shoot with anyone in the league
7. Force 22 out of the paint - he's their only inside force and was held to nothing on both ends when out of the paint. In the paint he's a banger
Ball State missed what seemed to be a hundred shots and didn't finish a thing and still won the game. If UWM can connect on their shots, there is no way WSU can stop UWM, no way. I haven't felt this confident in a while about a game as long as UWM shows up to play. They, WSU, are sloppy on D, and in an up-tempo game or slow defensive battle we can overpower and outscore them easily, either way. Tucker and McCants will kill them off the dribble, I'm talking career games if the same WSU team shows."
I like to hear things from regular season play about other teams. You can look at who teams lost, recruited and all that, but until there is a good look at what a team does on the court, assessments can not be made. To me, it seems WSU has some good players, but are not up to the hype.
