Some at UIC think that Bailey isn't coming back for his Prop 48 year. Not suprisingly, grades are a factor. This would make us again the frontrunner for the HL title again, with our definite advantage of the PG position with Hill and Hanson. Here's the link: members4.boardhost.com/uicflames/It's under the thread Detroit and next season. Also, I have head that its going to take Williams and Banks until August to get their degrees so they can qualify for Prop 48 status. My guess that one out of the 3 is coming back. Any thoughts?

I have nothing to base this on, but I agree with you uwmfootball. My gut tells me that one of the three may be back next year......... I would be surprised if two made it, shocked if all three made it, and not entirely blown away if none of them make it. I am not passing judgement on these guys, and I wish them the best (on a personal level, not basketball ), but old habits are hard to break. They were Prop 48's for a reason, and now they have backed themselves into a corner and forced themselves to try to get it done in the final seconds (i.e. last possible semester). Granted, it is fairly hard to graduate in 4 years (something these guys have to do to be granted an extra year), but I just don't see it happening.

I hate to sound naive, but I don't know much about Prop 48....what exactly does it mean? I can glean a little from your conversation but am curious a bit about more details....
Thanks!

I am going to try to explain it VERY simply (the only way that I know how to do things ). haha If you want a full narative on the subject, talk to pnthr97, I am sure that he can write a dissertation or something . Anyways, a Prop 48 is someone who either didn't meet the minimum grade point average or minimum ACT (or SAT score) requirements in high school. It is my understanding that they did meet one of the requirements (either GPA or test score), but not both - and are therefore called a partial qualifier. I do know what the exact requirements are these days (I think a 17 on the ACT, but don't know about GPA - maybe 2.0ish???). Anyways, the NCAA clearinghouse (governing body that monitors incoming athletes academic history), lays down the rules and checks up to make sure that all incoming freshman/transfers, etc. have meet the minimum requirements set forth. Seeing as a partial qualifier has meet one of the minimum standards (but not both), they (NCAA) allow the athlete to go to school, sit out one year (first year), and have three years of eligibility remaining (assuming that pre-written academic goals/standsards have been meet). If the athlete stays on track and graduates in four years (the first year they sit out and the three remaining years), the NCAA allows Prop 48's to apply for a fourth year of athletic eligibility, while continuing their education (grad school, multiple degree, etc.). I can't recall many Prop 48's at UWM in recent years. Cyrus Caldwell is the only one that comes to mind. He sat out his first year and then played for three years. Hope this clears things up a bit. Please feel free to make corrects if I have mis-stated things, or explained them incorrectly.

I am with you guys, I would not be shocked if Bailey doesn't return. My gut feeling tells me that Banks will be back for sure, since he has a legitimate shot at winning POY in the Horizon next year. It also looks like UIC fans are not happy with the recruiting job Jimmy was doing this past year. Lets say Bailey and Williams do not come back, do they get to the scholarships back this year or would they have to wit until next year. If UIC has to wait until August to find out if these guys are playing they will be at a huge disadvantage b/c they would have only 10-12 scholarship players on the roster.

It is my understanding that they (UIC) will get the scholarships, but like you said, they have to wait till August to see if Banks, Williams, Bailey are getting them. If these guys don't do what they need to do, UIC is in a bad spot - scholarships but no one to give them to. Glad that is not something we have to worry about......

I am back from the dead. ;D
If Banks returns, who gets preseason POY? I would assume it will be between Banks and McCants. My guess is that they give it to Banks.
If Bailey does not return, I would consider UWM for preseaon favorites. Our line up has never been this deep with tallent, and our starting 5 with the addition of Passley should be very tough in the HL. Finally we can move back to Pearl's crazy style of basketball.
Bring on Midnight Madness!

Freak, So, how WAS the afterlife?? I might have to go with McCants...he's a better highlight reel guy for POY.... RE: Midnight mayhem, mark your calendars for Friday, October 15th. Time, well, uh.....midnight! I've heard Athletic Dept. is considering hosting it at the Cell, maybe bringing in some other entertainment venues...still early but sounds like a cool idea!

"I've heard Athletic Dept. is considering hosting it at the Cell, maybe bringing in some other entertainment venues...still early but sounds like a cool idea!" Hey uwmfan, I heard the same rumors. That should make things even more exciting. It should be interesting to see what Passley, who we now know is a high jumper, can do in the dunk contest! Hopefully they can attract students down to US Cellular Arena. It is a little too earlier in the season for most students to pay attention. It generally takes ESPN or a championship game to draw them out of the dorms. Later, UWMFreak

Freak, What?? You don't think Marcus Conigliaro is going to bust one out this year? Yeah, it may be a little bit early, but I think Klotsche Krazies the are on board with this would do themselves a great favor once again to organize and be ready at the New Freshmen Orientation Sept. 1st when incoming kids can connect with the KK's and other student orgs. Bring on the new ones...I'm already seeing the interest of the new students coming in, and they seem pumped. Again, if they can get some headline entertainment and some better media coverage (yeah, I know, I haven't stopped laughing either.....man, we crack ourselves up, don't we?) it might be a decent crowd. I have a hunch I'll be there!

I will kind of miss the student section, but having nice chairs and reserved seats will be a great change. Any way, hopefully we get a good student turn out for every game and that their participation grows each year. Haha. Yeah, we all know how that goes! Maybe if we are lucky we will get some media coverage before Midnight Madness and a post event write up. Somehow I doubt it, that would be asking way too much. I am sure Brett Favre's thumb will again get headlines over us. Later, UWMfreak

Copy editors at the Northwest Times must be asleep at the wheel, along with the writer ...
"Bush's opportunity for steady court time might be good right away as the Flames seek to fill some holes next season and return to the NCAA Tournament for a third straight year."
Ahem, I do recall UIC losing in the first round of the NIT last year.
