Flames left in ashesJayhawks easily breeze past UIC[/color] By Bill Jauss Tribune staff reporter March 20, 2004, 12:05 AM CST KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- A bigger, stronger, quicker, deeper, better poised band of Kansas Jayhawks ended Illinois-Chicago's winningest basketball season 78-53 here Friday night. And it was no fluke. Kansas, seeking to reach the NCAA tournament Final Four for the third straight year, opened tourney play by whomping the Flames in every phase of the game: shooting, passing, rebounding, defense, bench strength. You name it. The Flames didn't quit after they fell 20 points behind in the first 15 minutes. Cedrick Banks' 15 points helped them play evenly through parts of the second half. But the outcome never really was in doubt. J.R. Giddens' 17 points led Kansas. Turns out the Jayhawks didn't even need it. No. 16 Kansas coasted to a 78-53 laugher over Illinois-Chicago at Kemper Arena. The victory marked the 21st straight time the Jayhawks have won their opening-round game of the NCAA Tournament. It also moved KU, a No. 4 seed, one step closer to its third consecutive Sweet 16 appearance. Kansas will take on No. 12 seed Pacific about 4 p.m. Sunday for the right to play in St. Louis next weekend.
