that people call al hanson "big shot al".
He's made one big shot in his life, and that was 5 years ago when he was a sophomore in high school in the quarterfinals of the state tournament. yes, he made two big free throws last year against UIC, but seriously, why that nick name?

hey buddy...listen here. I'm in my third year as a student at UWM and I have attended every regular season and post season home gaine since the fall of 2004. I've played with and against every player on the team in the Klotsche Center, and even am relatively good friends with a member of the team. I am as about as a big of UWM fan as it gets.
First off, Avery Smith sucks. Pure and simple. I will say this on here due to the fact that this is a public message board, good for debate and conversation. It is not affiliated with the team or school. I am a realist (unlike 98% of you) Al Hanson is garbage also. He's not "Big Shot Al"- he is a good free throw shooter ,however. I love this team but there's parts of it I don't like, I'm not going to cover it up and be affraid to admit it.
Secondly, our student section is horrible. Most of the guys that stand in that front row are a joke. They've been the same people the last several years. They think they are kings of the student section and that any one else that attends is less than them. Learn to accept the casual student fan! I am still a student but actually purchase real seats. I can't take the crap that these kids think they are.
Now this is real. Feel free to be critical of me. I work 50+ hours a week, go to UWM full time, and still make every game- and PAY for my tickets.
I feel I've earned the right to post my opinions on here, atleast more than you. So feel free to neglect and not read my posts on this board. I will continue more and more, however, to include my insight.
Although sloppy, a huge season opening win last night!

hi guys. please do me a favor: let's try not to get into another one of these "I'm a bigger Panther fan than you are" pissing contests here. they really tend to drag down the whole board. tru, you're definitely entitled to your opinion, but I wouldn't be too surprised if you don't find a lot of traction if your follow up to a game in which Al and Avery contribute 24 points, six assists and nine rebounds to a win is that they suck and are garbage. Sure, both players have room to grow, but both continue to grow, so let's try to encourage them instead of running them down. also, I guess I'm with you on not liking the Big Shot Al nickname, not necessarily because he can't or hasn't hit the big shot, but more because I just think it's kind of a lame nickname - after all, who wants a nickname that can be shortened to "BS", or "BSA" finally, I know it's an informal forum and I certainly make my share of spelling mistakes here as well, but there's only one f in afraid. As in don't be afraid to use the spell check before posting.

avery smith is not only the quickest gaurd we have but es a also to date proved that he is the best at getting nto the lane and geting to the rack. thas gnna allow him to get easy baskets, get to the line and create for other players. He hasnt reached his potential yet, he definately does not suck. to say that hm and Al suck is pure ignorance and stupidity and you sold be embarrassed for posting that joke of an analysis because it shows how little you know about basketball

Avo had a very good game tonight. He seemed to be only guard trying to take it the hole, to score and/or draw the foul.
I was not a big fan of Avo's offense coming into this season, but it's clear he's gotten much better. He can still have some control problems but overall, he's doing a better job at guard than anyone else is.

Yeah, this was the first time I've seen the guys play this year, but Avo actually looked under control against UAB. He was actually decisive once he beat his man and got into the lane. Of course, he was putting up his shot instead of passing tonight, so maybe that's why he looked a little more composed.

Avery did look alright tonight. His shot makes me cringe though. I wish Rick would have posted up more. After that first possession where he posted up and hit that turn around, I got the feeling that he could have done a lot more of that. But they just had no flow or offense whatsoever.

Maybe we should change pantherpanther's board name to "big mouthed al". Maybe you should chill like your friend. If you have the right to post your comments, then I have the right to disagree, and that is EXACTLY WHAT I DID...

considering Al's our top 3-pt. shooter as of now, no one has any real room to criticize his nickname. if i remember correctly, he was given the nickname by the team last year.

I was just poking fun. Anyway, you didn't merely disagree. You told the guy not to post that stuff here. Todd And you guys wonder why other team's fans laugh at us. It's one thing to have a lively discussion about a particular player, his talents, and/or lack thereof, but the way some of you bash them on this board is ridiculous. I have checked out message boards from other schools and don't see that there. Then the same damn people want to get defensive when someone from another school bashes our program or a particular player. Why? If you are a true fan, then realize that some things are better left unsaid. We all know Al was a role-player until this year - ok - but to me, the comment that truwarier made was not called for - especially if you call yourself a fan. You can disagree with me all you want, just like I can disagree with you. We can all talk about the fundamental deficiencies our team has, and the struggles we will have this year, but as fans, we should be their biggest supporters. Other schools do it for their players, why can't we? And truwarier...you don't know anything about me man, so while I applaud you for your schooling, working, and paying for your tickets, that does not mean that you are any bigger a fan than I am. Bash me all you want...I could give a crap...I just think those types of comments are uncalled for.

The bottom line is that negativity like that should not be spread on this board. Being critical and being a negative prick are 2 different things. Statements like "Avery Smith sucks" are pointless. While I respect your right to think that, it leaves very little room for discussion and does nothing except piss other posters off.

I guess that the bottom line of my point was that Avery Smith and Al Hanson can't run the offense effectively. They didn't move the ball, and got nothing into the post. They both took a lot of bad shots. I might have been a bit out of line with my comments as far as how I stated them. I can understand why Rob is starting them, they have more expierence than anyone. I would personally like to see Franklin and Swiggett start in the backcourt, with Paulsen, Skinner, and Mauldin in the post. Mauldin isn't much of an offensive threat but he atleast could put a body on the big guys from UAB. Massiah should get a few more minutes and be more assertive, that would definitely help the cause.
I would consider myself a "true fan". You're right, theres no point debating who the biggest fan or fans are, and nor was I saying I was a bigger or better fan that anybody else, that's just ridicolous. I missed my first home game in the last three years on Saturday, and last year I saw every game first hand or on tape except the Montana game, so I definitely do know this team as well as most. There's a lot of GOOD fans of this program. That's obvious by reading this board.
We're not all going to agree on who we think should start, or on nicknames. I originally started this thread to stirr up alittle controversy, but I didn't expect other people to take it out of hand.
Also, why didnt Roman Gentry redshirt? It doesn't look like the staff plans on using him much this year, and having that extra year would be much more beneficial down the road.
