Fourteen regular-season home games, contests with six teams that made the postseason a year ago and regional battles with Big Ten foes Wisconsin and Michigan highlight the 2006-07 University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee men's basketball schedule, released today by head coach Rob Jeter.
The home schedule is spotlighted by the John Thompson Foundation Classic, which will bring Pac 10 and Conference USA foes onto UWM's home court in the regular season for the first time ever. Mountain West Conference foe Wyoming also visits The Cell in late December. The 14 regular-season home games are the most since UWM played 15 regular-season home games in 1991-92.
The road slate, meanwhile, includes some of the top major and mid-major programs in the midwest, with trips to Northern Iowa and Missouri State in addition to the two contests against Big Ten foes.
It all adds up to a stiff test for a team with 14 of its 18 players in either their first or second year in Milwaukee.
"It obviously is one of the most challenging schedules this program has ever faced," Jeter said. "But, with what this program has accomplished, it is also the high-level schedule we should be playing.
"Young or not, we are aiming to prepare our team to defend its conference championship," Jeter added. "There's no question our focus is on the league, and the league is very strong this year. Expectations won't be quite as high for us, but we need to prepare this team to play at a championship level."
UWM will open play with a pair of exhibtion contests, hosting UW-Parkside Nov. 1 and Edgewood College Nov. 6. Then the Panthers start the regular season and the Thompson Classic Nov. 10 against Radford at the U.S. Cellular Arena. Milwaukee continues action in the Thompson Classic Nov. 11 by hosting Washington State and Nov. 12 at home against UAB before traveling to Ann Arbor for its final Thompson Classic game against Michigan. UAB made the NCAA Tournament a season ago, while Michigan played in the NIT.
"It is a tremendous honor to have been approached about hosting this kind of event," Jeter said. "The fact that Michigan and Missouri are the two other programs hosting games in the John Thompson Classic shows just where this program is. It should be one of the toughest preseason tournaments in the country, and we're very excited to be a part of it."
The busy stretch continues Nov. 19, when UWM helps open the new McLeod Center in Cedar Falls, Iowa, with a contest against NCAA qualifier Northern Iowa. Milwaukee then returns home for games with South Dakota State (Nov. 22) and Tennessee Tech (Nov. 26). The Panthers will be looking to avenge a loss in Cookeville last season against a TTU team that will likely be one of the favorites in the Ohio Valley Conference. Following the brief homestand, UWM returns to the road for three-straight games. The Panthers play at Central Michigan on Nov. 29 and at Oakland on Dec. 2 before returning last season's BracketBusters game with Missouri State on Dec. 6.
Milwaukee gets an early start on league play when it hosts Youngstown State Dec. 9 before facing two more tough non-league road contests. The Panthers play at Wisconsin Dec. 13 and at Sam Houston State Dec. 22. The Badgers are expected to be ranked in the top 15 nationally in the preseason while Sam Houston State won 22 games and finished second in the Southland Conference last season.
UWM then closes out 2006 with a pair of post-Christmas home contests. Wyoming, which lost on its homecourt to UWM a season ago, visits Milwaukee Dec. 27 before the Panthers begin Horizon League play in earnest with a Dec. 30 contest against Butler.
The Panthers will play nine Horizon League games during a busy month of January. After a contest with Detroit wraps up a three-game homestand, UWM plays contests at Loyola (Jan. 6), Cleveland State (Jan. 11) and Youngstown State (Jan. 13). The Panthers then finish the month with four out of their last five games at home, with a road contest at Detroit (Jan. 25) sandwiched around home games with UIC (Jan. 17), Wright State (Jan. 20), UW-Green Bay (Jan. 27) and Cleveland State (Jan. 29). The Wright State game will be part of alumni weekend for the basketball program.
UWM plays just one home game in the month of February. After a trip to Butler and Wright State Feb. 3 and 5, the Panthers have nine days off before hosting Loyola Feb. 14. Milwaukee then ends the regular season on the road for a BracketBusters game Feb. 17, at UIC Feb. 21 and at UW-Green Bay Feb. 24.
The Horizon League Tournament will follow the same format it has used since 2003. The fourth-through-ninth-place finishers will play first-round games on campus sites Feb. 27, with the three winners advancing to join the top three seeds at the site of the regular-season champion. The champion will have hosting rights for the remainder of the tournament, so long as it remains alive in tournament play.

2007-2008 Schedule
The completion of the 2006-2007 schedule means the 2007-2008 schedule is also well on its way to completion. UWM knows it will play at least six non-conference home games. That schedule will include a first-ever matchup between UWM and Wisconsin at the U.S. Cellular Arena. Northern Iowa, Sam Houston State, Central Michigan, South Dakota State and UWM's yet-to-be-determined BracketBusters opponent are also contracted to visit The Cell next season. With the addition of Valparaiso to the Horizon League, the Panthers will have a minimum of 15 regular-season home games. UWM also knows it will wrap-up its three-game series with Wyoming by traveling to Laramie.
Schedule Notes
UWM has never faced any of the teams it will play in the John Thompson Classic. In fact, Washington State will be the first Pac 10 team the Panthers have ever faced in men's basketball ... The only other current Conference USA team to play the Panthers at the U.S. Cellular Arena was Rice, which lost to UWM in the NIT in 2004 ... UWM and Northern Iowa will be playing for the first time since 1975 ... Including the league contest with Detroit, UWM will play four games in the state of Michigan ... Five of UWM's non-league opponents finished in the top 50 of the RPI last season ... Details are still being finalized, but UWM expects to televise between 6-8 road contests. Full broadcast information should be available later this month.
