OK, I know this is probably a mistake and just the opposite of what our moderators probably want right now, but I feel like I've got to stand up for Bill Johnson. Every time I've talked to him at a Panther function or another event where he's promoting his station, he's always been super nice and I just can't believe I've been coming onto this board today and read what I have seen posted about him here. He's been the one steady advocate UWM basketball has had in the local media and to see him called a fairweather guy, a bandwagon jumper, etc, just doesn't sit right with me. Remember a few short years ago when the signal was so weak that you'd lose the broadcast when you drove under a bridge during the game?
A lot of us went a little nutsy last night and if we're mad Bill called us assholes, maybe we shouldn't act like assholes and we'll all be better off.
BTW, can you say assholes on the radio these days?
OK, stepping down off the soap box now, go ahead and flame away, or delete this, or edit it, or whatever, but I felt like Bill deserved a little better after the way he's treated me and our team over the years.

I'm sure he is a nice guy but when he starts calling UWM fans assholes he's not so nice anymore. We support the team too and quite a few of us were pissed on this board last night. But there were what, 100 people on at one time. How many of those people posted? Not all 100. How many people are registered for this board? Well over 1,000. How many fans does UWM, many times more than that. I don't recall saying anything negative last night. In fact, I was trying to calm people down by stating that I didn't think Jeter would leave because the numbers didn't crunch right.
I'm offended by his assholes comment because I'm grouped in with it. And since when should people be called assholes just because their opinions were different than his? We were shocked, scared, worried, nervous, angry, bitter, man all kinds of emotions were going on. I had to go to bed to quit thinking about what was happening last night.

He is a good broadcaster and he's a great booster. But when he says something people disagree with, they have a right to say it. No one's doubted his committment to UWM BB, just his choice of words this morning and the attitude that went with them.

his committment to the program was definitely questioned along with his diction. I just think one of the reasons we're upset by what he said is that his comments may have hit a little close to home. thanks for the civil tone of your replies though, I was a bit worried what the reaction to my original post was going to be.

I think it comes down to this. Earlier in the year Butler message board peeps and peeps on other message boards were giving Bill a hard time about his commentary on the games. Calling him "homer" and "bush" and other things not in good nature. We UWM message board "assholes" went to bat for him. We stuck up for him on our board and on other boards. We stuck behind him. And when it came down to it, he blasts us because we thought we were losing our coach and we knew that feeling all too well.

I agree that Bill was a bit overzelous in calling us all assholes. I do believe he was wrong in that aspect and shouldnt have done it. We all say silly thing from time to time, but Bill is on the radio. I would say he could be a bit more cautious, but part of why I love his broadcasts is because of his off the cuff remarks and his abilty to say what his on his mind, within reason. He knows how to push the envelope with his broadcasts without, in my opintion going over the line. I wouldnt want anyone else doing our game broadcasts.
By the way, This thread thus far has been a great example of how to discuss differing opinions in a cival manner.

You guys did stick up for him and look at how he repays you. Seems like one hell of a guy to me. Todd

Take your holier than thou market that the Butler fans have cornered back to Indiana.

I'm not aware of any other school's broadcaster calling their own fans "assholes". If it's "being holier than thou" to point that out, then I think you have the bigger problem!
Bill "cough drop" Johnson is an unprofessional hack, and this episode proves it.
I just wonder when the guy is going to come over here to appologize to you all... that will be funny. I'm sure not many of you will have the balls to call the jerk out!

Take your holier than thou market that the Butler fans have cornered back to Indiana. better yet, they should go polish all those super bowl trophies Peyton Manning has helped the Colts win ... or actually all those super bowl trophies the colts have one while in Indy.

Good one, when you have nothing less to support yourself, turn to the Colts jokes!
Aren't the sports broadcasters actually employees of the athletic department? That's pretty amazing that someone employed by the university would go on record with such a comment!!
Bill - take that foot out your mouth!!

Bill very well may has said it, but I still find it hard to believe that he used the word "asshole" on the radio. I was listing to the streaming audio at work, but wasn't paying that close of attention since I was going over my TPS reports . If he did in fact say it, the FCC would have to come down on him for this wouldn't they? I really think Atherton Barber bitterness toward Bill stems from not getting a D List number ;D

If you're talking about the "D-List"
it's a show on ESPN 1500... i don't know much more about it. Isn't Drew Olsen (Brewers writer) the main guy on it?
