listen and see if u agree, with uwm continuing to win hor league every year, it might be time for a new confernce maybe one where they are the worst team, but as the years go on they start to get recruits and become a power house, like gonzaga, kinda like a bruce pearl moving tennessee from a no body to a somebody, this will bring spotlight recruits which will eventually bring this team a national championship

I think that is quite a ways away...It is great in theory but the fact is we are just not there yet...We have won the HL for a few years now but prior to about 5-6 years ago we were the laughing stock of the league...We would have to run house in this league for another 5-10 years to even start to think about
We wont leave the HL for a while, but it is wishful thinking and I like that

dont forget tho that it was a huge jump we made just out of div 2 i think we were in. correct me if im wrong, but that was a huge jump and the success we had last yr was just beyond belief from a past div 2 team

In addition, not just men's basketball moves ... ALL sports move. We don't have a softball team, we don't have a football team, we don't have a men's tennis team or wrestling team. Few conferences are available for a program like UWM to move into.

Don't get me wrong, I would love to see UWM's profile continue to rise. But right now, UWM has to continue to build on the success of its flagship program (men's basketball), while also improving its athletic profile in other areas.
Soccer and volleyball are great examples of that happening.

I agree with the posts so far. I think the biggest plus would be if UWM had a football team. I am out of the loop on most of the other athletics at the school, having graduated a few years ago. What are the prospects for UWM launching a football program?

sadly chances arent good brewcrew. santiago has said that their will be no footbal team created while he is chancellor. he wants to maintain the athletic program and focus only on research expansion, which is a good thing, but one wonders could both be done at the same time. if i had my way next season we'd enter the D3 ranks of football then in like 5-10 years make a move for D1-AA. being D3 would be beneficial for us since athletic scholorships are not offered at that level, thus giving us time to develop the neccessary womens sports to fullfil title 9 requirements. then issue of where to play. in D3 a HS stadium would be sufficient so playing at shorewood hs would be ok. the later move would require our own venue. this also being a huge obsticle both in getting funding and finding land. not even to mention how the old geezers and the asshole alderman are against the U epxanding in any fashion, wheather it be reasearch, new dorms for freshmen, or the placement of a driveway, a stadium seems to be out of reach for quite awhile.

Gonzaga is still in the WCC and they are having NO problems recruiting star players to their university. Players like Micah Downs, Erroll Knight, and Dan Dickau have transfered from high profile univerisities to Gonzaga. As much as I would like to see UWM in a bigger, more "major" conference, I wouldn't like the fact that they probably wouldn't make the tourney year in and year out. The HL provides us with a league where we can be one of the 65 and make a name for ourselves (As Gonzaga did). Recruits will come if we keep winning. Just ask South Florida how it likes being a door mat in the Big East and fighting with the UCONN's, Syracuse's, and Villanova's for recruits. We've cut out our own niche in the Midwest and our league has allowed us to do so.

That's a very sensible post, FTA1982. I think UWM's place is in the Horizon and I am happy with it. But what I would like to see is having more than one (three per season, maybe) competitive teams in the league. By competitive teams I mean teams that make the mid-major ranking, are mentioned as bubble candidates come February and March, teams that are getting votes in the national polls, etc. In short, I would like the league to raise it's profile to a MVC type of level.

Recruits like to go to places where they can win and have a chance to go to the big dance. Going to a league where we get pounded won't help us any. Despite its faults (and they are numerous), a league like the HL allows UWM to do what you are seeing this year, develop its game with good players and peak at tourney time when it counts.

well if we get a win in the dance this yr i think we can get up to 3 tough non conference games excluding wisconsin but i would like to see mu at uwm or vis versa, i think we should get something like acc vs big ten only mvc vs hor, bring big bucks and national publicity

We could be D-II in football but according to a recent JS article the U says that would cost like 21 million to start up and is out of the question.
We are in a time of shrinking resources. Eventually the Men's BB team will make money but I doubt that's happening right now. We are lucky the U is being as supportive as it is at a time when the Legislature is cutting back on funding for the UW system as a whole.

Big DWSU: Actually that is not true we can be D3 and D1...look at Colorado College, they are D3 in everything but hockey...so it could be done, but adding football would be a great way to drive the athletic program into the ground, knowing the poor support of the community for everything else why would they support a really poor football team???
