I heard a fan at one point during the second half of the game yell "Avery Smith sucks!!" Now granted he was 3-12 from the floor but this is NCAA basketball not the NBA!! Defense can make a player just as valuable as a talented offensive player. That’s right defense is encouraged so lets review Smith off the bench collected seven points, six rebounds and five steals. How the hell does that make him a bad player damn uneducated fans!!!

I've said it before and I'll say it again. Not only is will he be the best player our school has ever had, he'll be playing for an NBA team somewhere. 5 steals is no small feat.

Avo...by far the MVP of this game...maybe not the highest scorer but by far the biggest spark of the bench tonight!

Let's not get ahead of ourselves, Avery is no where near the best player to play for UWM. I'd put Clay, Ronnie, Dylan, Ed and Joah ahead of him, as well as many others. He's not a starter and doesn't shoot all that well from the outside. At this point, he's a solid role player.

Avery has an immense amount to learn about this game, and it's obvious to me Robbie J is doing as much teaching as he can. His offensive performance yesterday was spotty, but his instincts were good.
But on defense? That was one of the most intimidating defensive displays I have ever seen at the college level. Avery may have the best defensive hands I have seen since Mike Kelley at Wisconsin.
He's not within miles of his potential, but I agree that he has a chance to be truly special.

Smith played great defense yesterday and really helped stop hawaii when they went on a couple of scoring runs... I believe he will be a very very good player in the near future

i like the fact that during almost every break in the game smith was right by jeters side taking in what jeter was saying to him. I agree this kid has a shot at being a great player. Still alittle unsure on what his status is, is he a soph. or a freshman. Someone tried saying he was a sophmore but i could of swore he was a freshman. I think saying he'll be in the NBA is a far stretch at this point, but for sure i cant wait til he feels more comfortable and he is asked to do alot more scoring. Hes gonna be damn good. Just shows jeters ability to recruit.

Good to see you made it to the board jdub.
The thing I love about Avery is his tenacity. He has a fierce look on his face when defending and it sure is fun to watch.
His shooting will have to improve by next season. But what an awesome weapon to have off the bench this year. Pure firecracker... pure effort. That's old school. And that's what makes NCAA basketball special.

"Franklin to Smith"
You'll be hearing that a lot for the next 2-3years. All we need is some bigs and we have the core for something special. Don't forget, Franklin is bigger, stronger and has a better shot than Smith. We'll have a guy the size of a running back at the point. Later, UWMfreak

Smith is a sophmore and while Jeter is a very good recuiter it was Ronnie Jones we can thank for Mr. Smith. He was his coach at the joco he was at last year and followed Jones here when Jeter added him to his staff. That is why is was going to redshirt, because he will not be scholarship until next year.

You are making a mistake if you think he has no shot or even a questionable shot. A lot of the misses last night were him putting the ball up cause there wasn't anyone cutting. The guy's 3pt stroke isn't perfect but I'd place him in contention for #2 on the team behind Boo of course. While it hasn't been shown yet in games, he lights up practices. We have never had a defender of his quality. It is, as has been pinted out, a joy to watch. The NBA problem with our past prospects Clay, Dylan, and Ed (Joah) has always been a lack of size at their projected positions. The fact that AVO has legit league size at the point and skills to play it gives him a headsup on each of these guys as far as future possibilities. I have yet to see Franklin play (HS of course).

He hasn't shown he can shoot except for one game.I'm not saying he will never shoot, but he hasn't yet.And that is what matters right now.And Boo,right now,is a MUCH better shooter.

Coolwind,
What did Boo show last night other than his 1-7 fg 0-4 3pt performance last night???
Everyone has shooting slumps, Boo has had 1 solid shooting HALF of the season.
