Kornheiser: "I am shocked to hear that there might be champagne in the locker room. This is not the death of western civilization."
Wilbon: "I don't see this as being that big of a deal."

Looks like it made it on PTI and around the horn. 4 out of 5 people said its alright and not a problem. However Bill Plaschke thinks its a big violation and thinks Pearl should be punished. But Wilbon, Kornheiser, Woody and Smith all think thats its not a big problem. Me too-honestly didn't I see on this thread that Pancratz stepped up and said only people over 21 grab the bottles. That shows that they weren't just fooling around. Besides how often do we get a game like that to experience.

It was a dumb thing to do, I agree but why would the J Sentinal write an article? A lot of things go on in locker rooms that don't get published in the hometown newspaper. Very tasteless and tacky writing. I would expect to see an article about this in Chicago but not in Milwaukee!

This is news whether it happened in Milwaukee, Chicago or Fargo, N.D. It cracks me up to hear people ask why the "hometown" newspaper would write a story like that. Clearly, those people have no idea what a newspaper is supposed to be. It's not the job of the newspaper to report only "good news". It's the job to report news, period. That includes good or bad. This clearly was a newsworthy event and frankly it was good reporting by the MJS whether you guys like it or not.

here is an article from about two years ago when Wagner College got into the NCAA tourney for the first time....they also had champagne celebration... this is quoted from USA TODAY Wagner nets first tournament bid NEW YORK — "For Wagner College's basketball program, the first 899 wins didn't matter much. But the 900th was an entirely different story. The Seahawks used that landmark victory for a first-ever ticket to the NCAA tournament. They beat equally tiny St. Francis of New York 78-61 on Wednesday night to win the Northeast Conference tournament. Tucked away in remote Staten Island, the Seahawks are accustomed to riding the ferry to Manhattan and being generally overlooked. Right now, though, they're basking in the glow of this accomplishment. Their tiny gym was packed with 2,100 fans — including mayor Michael Bloomberg — and the crowd spilled on to the floor to celebrate the victory. Coach Dereck Whittenburg was soaked in champagne and enjoying every drop as he saluted a team he crafted, one he convinced could make a dream come true........" there was no followup about the "champagne".... www.usatoday.com/sports/college/mensbasketball/games/2003-03-12-roundup_x.htm

My beef with it is how it was so blown out of proportion. UWM had a hard time sniffing page 1 all season and had NO stories that weren't on a gameday or following a game ... now this gets put as the top story on two days following an NCAA bid. Where's a follow-up on the championship game? How did UWM overcome poor free-throw shooting? What adjustments did they make on Cotton? Nope, couldn't find any of that. Only thing Manoyan gives us is a overblown celebration story that he only got because the JS happened to have a photographer in the locker room. At most this was a notebook story. The JSOnline poll says it all -- was this a big story or not? How do you think the UWM champagne incident should be handled? Forget it, it's no big deal (50.3%) It should receive only a reprimand (42.4%) The team should be severely punished (7.3%) Total votes: 3,503

alright that 7% of voters are assholes and thats all i'll say about that. now then this story will only stick around if we let it. we all have the same feelings on this one therefore, i suggest that we let this thread fall down so we never have to look at it again. done and done.

Personally, I think getting our name out there on PTI and Around the Horn is a GOOD thing for this program. Yes, some people think it's a big deal, but 90%+ agree that its been blown way out of proportion.
This is not bad publicity, IMO.
Also, get off the JS. They had every right (and duty) to report this. It is newsworthy, especially in today's day and age.
